I just rigged up my backplate. I installed a 2" crotch strap. Seems to fit well, but is there anything I can do to the webbing to soften it up and make it a bit less rigid?

Welcome to the board.

The crotch strap webbing is different stuff. Stiff for shoulder and belt (the 1 piece) and the soft stuff (like climbing harness stuff) for the crotch strap.

DO NOT use shoulder webbing for the crotch strap, man. YOWZA.

I was afraid of that. I was loosely following the instructions here: http://www.gasdiving.co.uk/pages/misc/kit/harness_2.htm

So I just used the cutoff piece. Seemed a bit harsh on the thighs. I'll have to shop around for some softer stuff.

Thanks!

If you want to buy one, they only cost like $7 at dive-rite express. I dont know if the webbing is any different - feels the same in my hand.

Dive that webbing a bit and see how it becomes flexible, also see how the kinks at the points where it turns (shoulders and waist attachment/threading points, buckle, d-rings) seem like thy are ironed into the webbing, so adjustment is a little fiddly at times! ;)

You're in Gods country - so its unlikely you'll be diving that crushing webbing with a 1mm (or worse... just trunks.)

I recommend going and finding the soft stuff. You'll be surprised how much ypu appreciate the stiff stuff on the shoulder straps... makes the chicken-winging into the thing (thanks Mech) a lot easier.

Or just go to the local sporting goods store and buy some 1" tubular webbing and a pair of 1" triglides. Should be all you need.

Use it.
