within visual distance depend water condition

I usually like to stay within the same body of water

where I dive the visibility is pretty limited, to say 10-20ft. We usually stay within visual contact but say on a drift dive we just plan the same depth and designate points to "meet" along the way

close enough so that they can locate and get to me with 15 to 20 seconds or so and viceversa so the distance varies with conditions. otherwise we're just two solo divers divin' the same ocean (which I have also been known to do, just important both agree to that plan before implementing it ;) )

How about adding "maintain physical contact"?

What was Catherine's line... Solo Divers with partners. So we might be close and we might be out of sight. I like Matt's same ocean description and of course the plan communicated before hitting the water.

This is my feeling as well....close enough that if they need me or vice versa that we can get to each other easily.

only if necessary to be able to locate and reach partner in around 20 sec (which it often is in many of our local diving spots, try as I might to avoid such conditions), otherwise thats a little to close for me.
