My wife has decided we shall go to Yap... therefore Yap here we come. Could anyone give me a report on Yap? How about transportation? She has heard that Yap is the Manta capital of the world - or ocean - and seeing a manta is on her bucket list (although she has lots of years to work through the list).

uggghhh - trying to find my trip report from Yap and will post here when i find it

hopefully Mike Veitch will be here soon with his thought (he lived there as a photo-pro for a while)

we went to yap ONLY because hubby had a manta itch that he had to get scratched... and got our mantas! hubby still nagging to go back

also, if you use cameras, dont miss the mandarin dives - and dive it at least twice, once to figure it out and second to get pics

i'm still looking for my report with pics

and we stayed at manta bay hotel

So, for someone from Texas, very easy to get to Yap. COntinental from Houston to HOnolulu then off to Guam and Yap. The hotel picks you up at the airport.

The diving is: 2 boat dives in the morning, back to resort for lunch. Then you can go out for more dives or experience the culture through tours or village dance etc.

The mantas are amazing, I would really suggest Aug through Oct for best conditions and great manta action with the clearest water. In fact, i will be there this Sept for 2 weeks teaching photo and video classes and putting on nightly presentations. Its a thing called Manta Fest 2008, more info on Manta Ray Bay Hotel & Yap Divers in Micronesia - diving where the mantas dive

I think its a great place to go for a holiday and you will enjoy the diving

i really liked yap - its only the getting there that i found so exhasting

but, when we go again (and it is when, not if) we will throw in a trip to palau while we are at it

Great thought. We might as well take a couple weeks since the air fare is so high and hit Palau and as you mentioned in the thread we should dive Guam as well. Again, thanks for the information and I look forward to Australia some day. Your beautiful country is on my list... but my wife's list first.

bfuqua,

almitywife's recommendation is dead on. If you are going to fly all the way to Yap then you have to include Palau in your trip if at all possible. Most people plan a trip to Palau with Yap as the "add on".

FYI, I also first went to Yap because my wife wanted to see mantas. Luckily though at that time we lived in Japan so it was a much easier trip.

Since then we have also been to Sangalaki Island and the mantas were even better. But I understand that resort has been closed indefinitely.

Hope you have a great trip.

Below is my trip report from last March. I liked it, as you will read, photos in my gallery too, but not enought that I would fly there to ONLY dive Yap. Plane arrival and departures times to the island are a horror.
