Ok, I have got a Sony HVR-A1 and am looking at getting a housing. There seem to be many many different ones out there all ranging anywhere from $1k to $5k. Is it best, or even possible, to rent housings to see how they function and to see how easy they are to use? I am really seriously considering the Gates but was wondering if there are others out there that are equally as good?

I guess rentals would depend on the dive shop and it probably wouldn't hurt to call around. Here in Japan I've seen places that say they rent out housings and/or housings + video camera for a few days at a time. Not sure if they are established dive shops or just individuals who are trying to make a few extra yen from their equipment (my guess is the latter).

What probably stops a lot of shops from doing rentals is liability. If you rent a housing and it floods, turning your expensive video camera into a corroded paperweight, who is to blame? Was the housing defective? Or was the user not careful when sealing it up before the dive? It could get messy.

It's really too bad. Being able to rent different housings would be really, really nice. There's so much to choose from: electronic vs. manual controls, available camera controls, external monitor or flip out monitor options, ports, bouyancy and out of the water weight, etc., etc.

If I had to do it over again, I'd probably make a list of all the things I think are important for how I shoot, then start shopping from there. The final decision is so dependent on personal preference.

Good luck.

That range is quite enough to get a prosumer housing for A1. Check Amphibico site for electronic controls;

or
Gates site for manual controls;

Ocean Images are also building one for A1 but don't know how reliable they are...

hope this helps,

Backscatter rents both the L&M Bluefin and the Top Dawg - surprisingly the camera just fits in the Top Dawg with a standard battery, but you won't have any access to the extended controls on your A1U. So I'm assuming that the Stingray would also work since it's the same case.

It's $300/day or $900/wk for the L&M through Backscatter so you're probably better off just buying something.

I've found that a good source for info about the various models would be Mike Luzansky@H2OPhotopros. He helped me get my Amphibico EVO and is familiar with the various options. He's a member here also.

IMHO equivalent housings to the Gates would be the Amphibico EVO Pro or the L&M Bluefin. But I think only the EVO Pro will do MWB through manual access to your camera's Assign button. Gates does it somehow but I'm not familiar with the details, Mike knows as he has one. AFAIK L&M doesn't provide an option for MWB. Another mechanical option is Ikelite, they provide reversing circuitry for their external mirror option for the HC1 housing and also pushbutton access to the Assign button.

PM if you have any other questions. Especially about the EVO as I've got one.
