Hi there

Can anyone please recommend housing for the sony a1 hvr a1e? The Gates one is very heavy and impractical for travelling. Anything lighter/cheaper?

Thanks!

Aaron

Seatools are about 2.5# But the A1/HC1 model might be discontinued as it's no longer listed on their website. Welcome to Seatool USA!
Seatools is the US distributor for Fisheye, here's the housing on their website:
Seatool HC1PRO/A1PRO@Housing
Check with Ryan at Reef Photo, they've got one on their website: http://reefphoto.com/index.php?main...d=2373&zenid=9a20856d3993898f1cae3aaf8d4c8a4e

Next would probably be the TopDawg at 6.5#. Top Dawg Underwater Video Housing, Top Dawg Mini Housing, Top Dawg II Housing

My guess would be the L&M Stingray would also be lighter, it's aluminum with a flat port. But probably a little heavier than the Topdawg due to the control handles. They're both made by L&M. Light and Motion - Stingray System Personally I'd pay the extra $100 for the controls on the handles.

The Ikelite is about 10# if you want to stay with a mechanical housing. HD HC-1 Sony VIDEO HOUSING

Maybe the Ocean Images also - not sure what they weigh. Ocean Images Underwater Digital Video Camera Housings - Sony - HC-1, PC-110, PC-100

I shoot an Amphibico EVO/HC1 - stay away from it if you're looking for light weight....lol (It's 12#) Although actually it flies every where I go in my roller carry-on.

Steve, thanks so much for this detailed response. In a nutshell...which would you recommend, taking these factors into account? and would you choose manual/electronic?

Lightness is a major factor for me as I want it to fit into my backpack! Oh and cost too...

I'm always going to suggest an electronic housing as I like the controls in one place. The Seatool is by far the smallest/lightest of those I listed. Nothing else really comes close, they managed to mold their housing around the camera. I've held one, they're tiny (so are the buttons if you've got big fingers...) But the most expensive.

I believe you can separate the base from the housing on the Ikelite for travel.

When I bought my EVO, neither the Gates, Seatool or new Stingray were available. If I was doing it today, I'd take a long look at the Stingray + - and maybe buy their Bluefin instead. Cost is not so much a factor for me. And I don't have to fit it in a backpack.

There is still plenty of housings out there for your A1E. If your looking for the lightest, your probably looking at the Ikelite. Just remember its a clear acrylic housing, and with that comes some pre-cautions. The metal housings such as gates, L&M, Equinox, etc are more bulky and heavier. But they do have some advantages over an acrylic housing.

Did you have a weight in mind? What kind of budget?

I used to have an ikelite housing for an A1, worked fine, the main limitation is your WA options. Although I believe that they have released a specific WA port which may improve things.

Other disadvantages of Acrylic housings is that they are very prone to fogging especially in colder water and if the camera is running for longer periods.

Yes, the Gates housing is very heavy to lug around which has the positive side of being almost indestructible. You can buy floats from Gates which greatly help to maintain a neutral buoyancy and that is something to consider. I agree that the Acrylic housings like ikelite are frequently the source of many complaints regarding fogging and such. I have been using a Light and Motion housing for my A1-U and have had absolutely no problems with it. I may be moving to a new system soon and will be putting it up for sale but that is not a definite.
