In my overzealousness to get started in underwater photography I accidentally purchased an Olympus C-5500 instead of the C-5050. The C-5500 looks like a fairly nice camera, and it fit my budget, but the problem is that there isn't currently an underwater housing for the C-5500. From what I gathered in my research, it just came out recently in the past month or so.

What is the average time for new housings to appear after a camera comes out, if they even make one at all? I'm going on my first out of country scuba trip in October and hoped to have the system up and running by then. Should I just send back the camera and get the 5050 or wait and hope a housing comes out soon?

Have you checked Ike yet?...wait, just looked. They don't have one either. This site says they will send you and email as soon as a housing becomes available:

The 5050 has been discontinuted and you would get (if you get) a referbished one.

Digideep is where I was getting my information about if the housing was available, I like that site alot! The company I ordered from does not have the C 5050, so it looks like I'll be exchanging it for a Nikon Coolpix 5600. I wanted to try Olympus but the price difference between the two will cover shipping and the Nikon has a fairly cheap (160.00) housing already.

Sorry Olympus folks, I hope you don't think I'm a traitor <wince>

well at least you are getting a good trade ;)

Remember, often it's the photgrapher that makes the picture - not the camera

I'll just be happy to have any kind of picture since I'm not a regular land photographer either. I think I'm going to go with the Canon A-95 after finding out the Nikon didn't have any manual controls at all. Although I don't know how to use them yet, it would be nice to be able to change them in the future if I decide I need too, hehe.

Thanks again for the help.

Well, it is definately an advantage to be able to change some settings and I know that Alcina thinks very highly of the canon A line, so it's a good choice too.

Chris - the results I've been getting with my A85 have been very good - but I need a lot more practice AND I'm an "advanced" 35 and digital photographer on land - but under the water, its a LOT different!

If you really want a c5050 check out digitaldelivered.com
We purchased our first one from there with no issues. Around 400 (for a new one) and 360 for a refurb.
