Hotel reservations necessary for Utila in May?

Hi Everyone,

I would like to cruise around the island before settling on a hotel for a 2 week trip. Does anyone know if it's likely I'll need reservations? I dont want to find myself with no place to stay.

You'd most likely be fine in May, there's lots of basic hotel rooms on Utila, and unless it's a holiday week they usually have space.... but if you want peace of mind, why not make a reservation somewhere for just your 1st night. That way you know you have a place to stay on arrival & gives you time to look around till you find where you want to spend the other 13 nights.

Hi I was in utilia for a month over Christmas.

Rubi's Inn was the best budget value I could find. Very clean rooms, fresh towels every day, fantastic family, quiet, respectful peaceful safe space, ocean front access, kitchen access, small refrig in room, near everything, single $18US per night rubisinn@yahoo.com.

Ocean front is important because it greatly reduces annoying sandflies (take bug spray!). Also cooking is nice because lots of the food on the island is fried.

Personally, if a simple room with polished wood floor is ok, I'd book 2 weeks - Rubi's can be very popular so you won't regret it ;-). I think they have two rooms that face the ocean with 3 beds & a balcony for around $30 per night. If you go for the less expensive room, maybe ask for one with a nice view of the ocean - top floor towards the water gets more breeze & has a nicer view.

Two good dive shops nearby are UDC & Utilia Water Sports - not all dive shops are the same.

I stayed at Rubi's 2 years ago for two weeks. They really take good care of the place and their guests. It was memorial day weekend and I walked in off the street. They do not work on Saturdays so try to arrive some other time.
