Just returned from Coz. There are lots of nice places to stay on
the island, but there is major street renovation going on from the
downtown to PLG. Kind of a mess, but due to be finished in Feb.

We stayed at Vista Del Mar for about $50 per night - low season rate (two
weeks) for a room overlooking the street and the sea. Friends stayed
at the Meson (on the square) for a little less, and we looked at most
of the hotels in the downtown area. Prices ranges from $29 per night
for air conditioned room at the Palma Dorado (nice clean small hotel with
rooms and suites one block from town center - suite for two AC,
kitchen, LR, bath and two double beds - $45 - beds in the suite
we looked at were fabulously soft and comfortable - unusual for Coz)
up to $135 for a two bedroom condo that sleeps 8 at the Hacienda San
Migel just north of downtown. (Beautiful place - make a great
honeymoon spot. Smaller rooms are lovely as well.) This hotel is owned
by the same operators as the Vista Del Mar and they are very friendly
and helpful.

I used Dive with Martin for the second time this trip and was very pleased.
Will go with them next time. They offer a four day dive package including
four two tank dives with a free night dive and a free video of one of the
dives for a flat fee of $200. Great deal! They use fast boats, will pick up
at their place at the international pier, or Hotel Cozumel, El Presidente, and
others. The dive masters were great, boats comfortable, and they offer
use of their gear (BC, regs, etc) in the price. I recommend you bring your
own snorkel gear, and computer, but their gear is recently upgraded and
in good repair. I took my own BC and reg, but next trip will probably use
theirs to save the hauling. Most dive operators in Coz charge extra for the
use of their gear on reef trips.

Lots of good food places around. "The Rockin Java" just north of the Baracuda
hotel is great. Prices are quite reasonable, it is clean, has good breakfasts
for $4 to $6, excellent Mexican dishes, and the best hamburger on the island
with fries for $5. You can sit and watch the cruise ships come and go and
the activity at the local Mexican Navy yard just outside. Costa Brava hotel
just south of the Punta Langousta also has great food and is clean and
reliable. Behind the Punta Langousta there is a great small seafood restaurant,
La Lobsteria that offers a small lobster with shrimp and veggies for $12.50
Wife had that special and I had their ceviche for about $6.50 which was also
great. Located at corner of Calle 7 Sur and Avenedia 5 I think.

Hey Chuck, thanks for the report. We'll be heading there in late January, diving with DWM too! Glad to hear the gear is okay because I didn't feel like lugging my Zeagle Ranger and my GF didn't want to bring her SS BP/Wing. Just curious, what kind of BCs did Martin have?

fbosch:
we were going to carib bleu oct 18 but the damaged dock may be a deterrent any recommendations?
i stayed at the hotel cozumel in early dec. it's an IA. i'll be going back. it's close to downtown. large pool and the dive op. was a cross the street. you take the under ground tunnel to the dive peir. dove with dive paradise on the fast boats. hope this helps. geo

There's a terrific small bed and breakfast-type place right next to Casa del mar called Village Tankah. It's a set of small rooms, including one larger one in a tree with screen walls, surrounding a courtyard with a small pool. There's also a small 2 bedroom "suite" that's kind of like a small apartment. Very nice, quiet. The dive op, owned by the same couple, is Robertas's Eco-Dive cozumel. I had a great experience staying there and diving with them last time, and I'll be back there Jan 1-7. I'm kind of surprised nobody else on this board seems to know about it, but then again, I'm glad to always have soom room there.
