Thanks for the input all... We actually don't drink alcohol, I was looking at the all inclusive package because it seems like the A.I. is only $200 or so more for the whole week. And I could easily see myself spending a lot more than that on food by going out to restaurants for every meal. But now I am rethinking it...hmm...

I don't like the sound of the late and slow boats, I'm not the most patient person when I want to dive! lol Any OTHER recommendations for a similarly priced hotel??

Also is there really any point in renting a car if we're mostly only going to be diving..and the hotels seem to be within walking distance of the downtown area. Apparently we will be there during this 'carnival' I see people talking about in March, is this carnival a pretty big deal??

If you want to go during Carnival, you may want to hurry on your planning before choices are too limited.

Looking at air only: PBI,FLL, or MIA to Cozumel, QR, Mexico: various dates from Feb 22 2011 to Mar 12 2011
I see nice flights starting at $453 for those dates, not much higher on some others, but all combinations with returns March 10, 11, or 12 run over $500 and over $600 - one combo with the 11th actually over $700. I don't know when you want to go but I have to select dates and airport to look at an idea so I'll play with some, leaving and returning same airport...

You could book FLL-CZM: Mar 2-9, Hotel Coz, Garden View or Pool View with Private Balcony 322 Sq.Ft, FREE Breakfast Buffet + $50 Credit: Orbitz Vacation package air & hotel for two for $734 per person including hotel taxes (Ocean view 355 Sq.Ft - $19/night more each :shocked2:) THEN, use discount code 200entertain to take $200 off of the package for two, and uncheck the overpriced Airport Shuttle Service to get it down to $634 each. Easier and much cheaper to handle ground transfers there.

So compared to $456 tickets each, that would get your room down to $50.86/night for two, including taxes, breakfast and $50 voucher. :eyebrow: Book your diving with whomever you want.

It's just not my kind of property so it's hard for me to guess what else you might like since it appealed to you. We picked up a physician buddy there several days on my last trip (he was almost always late  but such a likable fellow) and he said his non-diving wife really liked it there - so whatever pleased her worked for him. I asked him if the rooms were a little small, but since he was the only diver and left much of his gear in the lockers, "nope." I'm just used to larger rooms; many hotels have smaller ones tho with people doing fine.

Anyway, doing breakfast there, then lunch wherever, dinners at enjoyable places in town would be the way to go I think, and getting your air & hotel package at $634 each, you can afford to spend more than $200 each on other meals. But how does that sound to you...??

Or you could book Casa del Mar with the discount for $599 each air & hotel, Standard Guest room - 373 Sq.Ft, and that might include breakfast buffet. It often does even tho not listed, but can't say? I think it's about a mile further from town, but - depending on where you go for dinner, I bet you'd be using cabs from either hotel - at about the same cost for either, but not that much for two people.

Or shop for Vacation packages at SideStep - Vacations - Compare Hundreds of Travel Sites At Once, be sure to check "On Cozumel only" to avoid nearby hotels on the mainland, select "sort price low to high" and look for Orbitz links so you can use the discount code. Don't believe their location info tho, as it's furnished by Google maps and very error prone; look at the actual addresses and double check on the hotels' sites.

As far as renting a car, I never do. Cars are cheap, but Collision insurance is a must no matter what your credit card tells you or booking site tries to sell you for less. If a problem happens, and you don't want to stick around to deal with it in court, in Spanish, you will pay before you leave unless you are well covered. Some Liability insurance is probly included on rentals, but enough to make me feel comfortable would cost more. And then there is the parking challenges in town. Walk, take a cab, maybe rent a car for day to tour the island, but I don't rent cars there.

As far as Operators, I think almost all are nice, friendly, relatively safe, etc - but I like fast 6 to 8 diver boats that get me to the south reefs in hurry, more importantly get me back in a hurry after we're finished. You can start a real cheerleading war by asking who likes which on a new thread, or look around. I used Scuba Mau last time, with them rinsing and storing my gear, after emailing for prices paid in US currency (real cash bills; I've had people read over that at times) for trips for less than $60 each including taxes and park fees. I'll certainly be returning to them, but others like others. One popular Op charges $85 for about the same thing and people keep going back. :dontknow:

Yes Carnaval is a BIG deal and is not to be missed if you are there.....hotels in town fill up pretty fast....you might want to check Blue Angel it is just down the road from Hotel Cozumel Cozumel Diving | Cozumel Vacation | Dive Packages

Carnaval is also known by many as Mardi Gras, so YES it's a big deal, and most hotels & dive ops fill up during Carnaval. We try hard to be there for Carnaval but this year we're expecting a granddaughter to come into the world right about then.

I have been going to Hotel Cozumel once or twice every year since way before it was Hotel Cozumel! It used to be the Las Brisas and even then was one of my favorite hotels.
The fact is, Laura and I stayed there in 2003 when we were married (on Nachi Cocom beach at sunset).

The hotel has always been well kept and clean. The rooms and facility may not be the most spectacular available on the island, but they are always one of the best values there.
The food does get boring very quickly. (But, town and good restaurants are close!)
The pool is the largest on the island. And, it is a pretty and well maintained pool.
And the staff is the friendliest I have encountered on the island!
As for Dive Paradise. They are certainly an adequate dive operation, but I personally feel that there are better on the island (Aldora). I have used DP several times in the past mostly when I was booked with dive groups that had made pre-arrangements with them. Their staff at the hotel is friendly and has on occassion put my gear away for the night when I forgot to pick it up from their drying racks in the evening.

It is a very "diver friendly" hotel and I feel you really can't go wrong in staying there.

I will admit that in recent times they have started selling both the boat people and locals day passes for the resort. I am sure this is for economic reasons as they attempt to keep the hotel solvent in the increasingly tighter market in Cozumel. I do find it a shame, however, that they have resorted to this. I feel it lessens the quality of the stay for the registered guests.

Hey! Hey!... Careful now!... I think I resemble that remark!.... Sounds like someone I know very well! :D
My perception was that too often you all simply arrived way too early! ;) LMAO
I am just used to other dive ops always running a bit late.... That's my story and I'm sticking with it! :eyebrow:

One other idea: If you would like to stay in town easy walking to cafes, Suites Colonial is a block off of front street and available with upgrade to Suite with Kitchenette, Refrigerator - 2 double beds DAILY BREAKFAST BUFFET: air & hotel including taxes for $522 each = $132 total hotel cost for the week over air, or $18.86/night for two people. Sweet for Carnival.

I think everyone has covered most other thoughts of mine except the following:

It's a LONG walk down hallways back to the lobby if you get put in a room toward the back of the sprawled out hotel!!!

They do NOT have fridges in the rooms.

and lastly, when we were last there in June 2010, the pool stayed PACKED with local children ALL DAY LONG! (don't know if it was clubs, teams, or schools ) It was very loud, crowded and not very relaxing at all around the largest pool on the whole island. We are divers and like to come back to chill in the pool, but that was not possible on our last trip there. Also, there was a huge wedding/reception while we were there too. Parking for our rental car was non-existent due to the crowd that came for the wedding. We felt very uncomfortable leaving our jeep on the road and felt hotel guests should have been given parking passes or told where to park safely.

Good luck in your decision of where to stay.

Going to go for my second trip to Coz in March. I will be staying at Hotel Cozumel.

The short walk to town is easy and kind of fun. The first trip there included my 1st ocean dive. DP was very safety concious and took the time to watch out for this newbie. I was totally satisfied with the staff, the food, and the dive op the last time I was there. Last time we were there we did go downtown for dinner and had a good time doing that too. I am going to be on vacation and not in a hurry so the pace there suits me just fine.
