...or warm, near, and free?

Anyone around here interested in short-notice, on-the-cheap, weekend small-boat or shore dives? Think no-tell-motel and shore diving... drive 4-6 hours, dive, eat cheap. Po' divin'! I can't find my old pal who used to call on a Thursday, show up with a pickup truck, and take off for St. Andrews...

I'm thinkin' Tybee, Panhandle, NOT springs. BOA-ring! We like salt. We don't like cold. We do like kayak diving. We want easy, shallow, lots of wildlife, and u/w photography.

I am a poor college student, and I am always up for warm, near, and free diving (emphasis on the free). I haven't done salt yet, or photography, or anything with more wild life than a few Budweiser cans. I usually just dive in the tub, but about once every week or two, I get out to Lake Lanier. I haven't been to Dive Haven, but I hear they have lots of wildlife...mostly ecoli.

I'm told that the chicken houses drain off to the other side of the hill [Dive Haven] and that they had the water tested there and it was good enough to use as a water supply (not that I plan on drinking it). however it is quite algae ridden (or was in February and I'm sure its worse now).

I would be up for a weekend road trip to PCB, Destin, Savannah etc. The guy I dove with last weekend would be too.

Lets go!

Hey I am a new diver who lives in Savannah...where you guys diving at? Hmmm wouldnt mind tagging along!

There's a guy on the board, CaptEsteban, who runs charters for manatee-watching in Crystal River. Neither salt nor scuba, but perhaps a nice cheap dive ($25) on the way to or from the Gulf...?

Shall we start cooking up something for the first weekend of June? Maybe we can do Crystal River, then Tampa, or vice-versa?

What about the Panama City Jetties? I heard that was ok and I'd like to try that some time.

Why not consider my deal I have going to Key Largo? Check out the thread I just started for details. Memorial Day weekend. I have a condo that will sleep 8 - 10 for just $125 a night. That split 8 to 10 ways times 3 nights (yea I got a clause in it) comes to a pretty cheap stay in Largo over Memorial Day weekend. I have other deals working for boat dives as well. They say the group leader dives for free, well this group leader doesn't. He splits the total bill amongst the group thereby increasing your dive dollar. How you get there and back is your problem. Send me a PM for more details.

Sounds good, but in the interim... maybe the jetties? How about first weekend in June? Drive your own car, eat fast food, crash at a Motel 6 or something?

I haven't been to the jetties in ten years, so don't know whether they're good diving anymore. Read something about the extension messing up the wildlife, but don't know how old that is. I know that, when they added more rocks aorund '98, it went from mini-reef to rockpile of nothin'.

I have seen wild dolphins (up-close!) and sea hares in the grassbeds nearby and dived the ship channel (stingray city, but DIVE DIVE DIVE... probably not a safe idea).

Other similar shore-diving ideas? Anybody here a kayak diver?
