Obviously for your hose and reg to be 100% DIR black is the choice for all hoses and regs, right? Is it ok to have your alt second stage reg and hose yellow? If not, where do I get a black regulator by itself? Im sure there is a way, but the only regs that come without a 1st stage are yellow alt regs.

I have Apeks ATX50 for my primary and ATX40 in yellow for my backup, would it work to unscrew the yellow plate from my 40 and swap it with my 50, so my buddy would be able to see my primary on a 7ft hose in an OOA? Of course if I did this, I would ditch the yellow hose for the alt second stage.

Thanks

You can be DIR and have flourescent pink regs and hoses, if you really wanted. DIR has nothing to do with color (except the often joked about Rule 6.)

Now, you probably don't want a bright yellow backup reg to prevent some stranger from making a grab for it, but if it's a concern, you can purchase a black faceplate for any Apeks regulator at any Apeks dealer. It takes about 5 seconds to swap them out.

And yes, the way you're suggesting would work too.

Awesome, thanks for the response.

My LDS isnt very pro-DIR (they dont do BP/W period), but Ill ask them about a black plate for the ATX40, if they wont do it theres always the internet.

I wouldn't worry about the fashion police either. Have fun and dive safely.

My primary reg is an Apeks TX40 with a yellow faceplate. My backup has a blue faceplate.

Since that's how I bought them, I prefer the yellow faceplate to be the reg in my mouth, because as Boogie mentioned, that's the one I want someone grabbing for if they're OOA. If I had my choice, they would be all black because it just looks cooler.. but I'm not about to pay extra for the priveledge :p My primary hose also used to be a long bright yellow hose.. I liked it, and only got rid of it because it was 5' and I needed 7 (see http://jonnythan.com/pictures/big_blue_10-05-03/picture (56).html and http://jonnythan.com/pictures/big_blue_10-05-03/picture (37).html for why I "needed" 7)

Reinoud, I went through all this the dive after that.. it was the first time I had seen my gear underwater on camera, and it.. prompted a few changes, obviously

I'm pretty squared away now, but thanks.

BTW, during that dive the backup did not get in the way of deploying the long hose at all *shrug*

jonnythan: Is that a shattered clay you're holding? (http://jonnythan.com/pictures/big_blue_10-05-03/picture%20(56).html) Hope no one's busting them when you come up!

It is! It's a quarry way out in the middle of nowhere.. the land around the quarry is covered with empty shotgun shells, bullet casings, and everything you can imagine that can be shot up.

Every now and then you hear some gunshots underwater..
