I have recently been intrigued with the sport of spearfishing. I decided to make my own pole spear and gave it a go. I purchased a rod made of stainless steel that is solid and threaded on the outside. It is 6' and weighs probably 1.5 lbs. I've got a band but I've run into a problem. I want a paralyzer tip, but cannot purchase one for my size pole. The pole is 7/16ths diameter and has 12 threads per inch. I'm a bit lost about what to do as to purchasing one. If someone has advice on making one for the pole I bought, it would be very much appreciated.

Welcome to the board.

Is the entire rod threaded or just the end. If it's the entire rod, it's not really suitable for a polespear. If it's just threaded on the end, I would cut off the threads, turn down the end to the correct diameter and then rethread it.

the whole thing is threaded. Why wouldnt it be good for a pole spear? Just asking thanks for the quick reply.

I guess you could but to use a pole spear, you allow it to slip through your hand as you release it.....just an educated guess but I suspect it's going to be really rough on your hand as it passes through and the threads will slow the shaft down limiting it's hitting power, distance and speed. At a minimum, I would encase the shaft in plastic tubing to reduce the friction and wear on your hands.

Do what herman says first.

Then, take the end and turn it down (grind off the threads) and use a tap and die set to rethread the end. You can try and use the T&D set to rethread the end without turning it down, but this will be MUCH, MUCH harder.

What if i put a coat of epoxy over it? would this help??

Just buy a pole spear they are cheap. Are you trying to save money or just want to make your own polespear? I know a few guys that make handcrafted teak guns that are very nice but you get ready to shell out $1500+. I have never heard of anyone making polespears but good luck.

That might do if you polish it down smooth, you need something that will slide through your hand....

I have to agree, a fiberglass one is fairly cheap and works well.

Isn't a solid stainless pole going to be too heavy to accellerate to a high speed when you let go of it? The fish will swim away when they hear this thing lumbering along toward them!

Good point, don't know for sure but seems reasonable. Assuming it is fast enough the weight would increase the penetration, not that seems to be a problem in my very limited experience with pole spears. Then there is stopping the thing, once you get it moving you have to stop it if it misses it's target. Shooting flounder on the bottom that would not be an issue but mid water that might be a problem, the shaft rebounding into your hand has got to hurt......sounds like the handgun forum. Bullet weight vs velocity. :)
