Too far from blue water..
Ok so we have the boycotts, the stop touching everything, the "if you have to ask", the DIR or die, and of course the if your PADI your an idiot attitude running around here. I know I'm a newb but when I first found this board I was amazed at the amount of support and knowledge confined within this site. I haven't found a more productive or powerful board related to SCUBA yet but why all the discontent and I know more than you do attitudes?

I think I heard something years ago about, if you don't have something nice to say....ahh I forgot the rest.

At what point as a diver do you feel you need to step in and correct another diver? Be it on the boat, at a dive site, or on the board. When is it "justified"/nessecary? Just wondering.

When there is an urgent and immediate need to do so to prevent the possible injury to the diver or another party.

misread this.

the line is always subjective. when someone might get hurt or endanger another is usually grey.

One person will intervene if you do not have a buddy, another diver will only say something if they think you are planning the impossible. This question has no answer, IMV.

Well done, Kraken.

because most are hiding behind keyboards, in real life, we are all loveable pussycats

On a boat or at a dive site, I wouldn't interfere with somebody unless I saw them doing something with an imminent potential for harm -- eg. noticing that somebody is about to jump in the water with their air off.

On a board, it's different. For one thing, if somebody posts on the board, they are inviting the board members into a conversation where everybody is free to voice his or her opinion. This is quite unlike the dive site or boat, where, unless somebody speaks to you or asks a question, they have not invited your comment. For another thing, a place like this is a place where people who are not currently in the water can reflect on their procedures and perhaps change them. For those reasons, I think if somebody posts here and reports behavior that other board members think is questionable, it's quite reasonable for them to question it, even if it doesn't directly address the issues the original poster wanted to discuss.

In other words, you open your mouth here, you're fair game :)

I am more of an observer here. To be honest, I dont have much experience to be offering advice, but I do jump in here and there. I have read some threads, where I have thought to myself, that these people would be throwing punches if it were face to face. Then I would read another thread with the same people agreeing, praising one another and acting as friends. I have thought this very interesting. I have also asked questions and was offended at times, but have come to realize, this advice offered is only to help everyone. I see it here, but I have never seen anybody step in and correct somebody they didnt know on a dive.

Absolutely correct.

As far as the animosity, like Catherine said, most of us really do love and support each other, it's just fun and games, trying to get each other's goat. Don't take it too seriously.

Well, because divers are human too, and run the gamut of personality types. There are also a variety of reasons why people post on the board, which impacts the quality of information you will get from them.

After a time, you will learn who is who ...

Justified and necessary only as needed to prevent potential injury or conflict. The latter includes divers who do irresponsible things that will reflect badly on the dive community as a whole (like not respecting private property adjacent to a dive site, for example) ... as such things may impact our ability to have continued access to certain dive sites.
