Got my new HOG reg yesterday and dove with it today. Overall I am quite happy with it. Seems well built, breathes really nice (keep in mind however I don't have tons of experience, for this comment and everything below as well just to be clear).
I did however have an issue while diving with the purge button sticking on the backup. I was at about 35 feet and decided that I should try switching back and forth to ensure I was comfortable using it (it is on a necklace which I am still getting used to as well). I had tried it on the surface prior to diving also. The backup free flowed at depth for about 20 seconds, I got it to stop and went back to my primary reg.
I got very near to shore and thought I might try the backup again and this time she free flowed like crazy and I could not get it to stop. Ended up having to shut off the tank. The issue turned out to be the purge button itself was sticking. I had a look at it back at the truck and thought that maybe I got some sand in it or something else. This was not a typical free flow at the surface situation but an actual button sticking.
Just took it apart at home and no sand to speak of in it, there was a minor amount of grit above the diaphragm but not in the button cavity itself. I totally cleaned it up so there was no grit anywhere in the reg. I then fooled around with the button a bit, tried seeing if I could make it stick in a non diving situation when it is totally clean. Sure enough the button would stick if I pushed on it on an angle at a particular location...
I then took an Exacto knife and some 600 grit wet sandpaper and proceeded to "tune" it up a bit. I ended up shaving a very slight edge off of the four retainers that snap into the hole in the front cover as well as sanding the edge smooth of the button itself. I now cannot make it stick at all now and seems much much better compared to earlier.
Question to the board is has anyone else had trouble with the purge button sticking? I believe that I have fixed mine. I would consider this a very minor issue that was easily tuned up in about 10 minutes. I am diving in a pool tomorrow so I will have one last chance to try it in the water before I take off to Cozumel Saturday. All comments welcome. I believe now I will be very happy with this reg and will keep you all posted.
