Histroy of the depth gauge

Hi all,

Wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I have been "volunteered" to do a newletter article for our club, and wanted to do something about the history of the depth gauge (as there was a discussion about guages at our last meeting).
Can anyone offer any help or ideas where I could research this. I have done some searches on the internet, but have come up blank.
