Good Morning,

I'm a new member here. In Jan. I wantll be take a class to become certified along with a signed release from my Dr. Are there any of you that dive with a hip replacement and if so, do you have any modifications? For instance, the use of smaller dive boats? I live in the East Bay therefore I'd like to find a place that has the classes on week-ends, no evenings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have a member of our dive club who's had both hips replaced more than once who has no problem. He does excercise on a regular basis though.
I don't understand your comment about smaller dive boats as I don't see what that would have to do with the subject?

Whoops. Welcome to Scubaboard :dazzler1:

okay, that should keep the Greeters off my back

My friend who dives weeky mentioned my hip replacement and perhaps I should go out on smaller boats - easier to climb up and out! A minor question! Does the person with both hips replaced dive in the large boats? I'm very active exercise wise - gearing up for a hike up Pikes Peak!

I had a hip replacement about 3 years ago and a knee replacement before that and the diving only got better after the replacements! I dive regularly out of Santa Barbara and Ventura on the big dive boats out of there without trouble.
Keep diving!!

I would think a smaller boat would be harder to get back into as you wouldn't have the ladder and maybe platform a larger one would.
Not sure what you mean by a large boat, but we dive off 40-45' boats at times.

Thank you for the info. My class in in January. I picked up the prescription for the goggles today. What masks (black with clear nose piece) is something that I want. I would like a split fin - any recommendations. It's so encouraging to know that you have both a knee and a hip - I won't feel out of place.

Regarding fins, I use split fins [Biofins] and I find them best for my needs. I've lost some flexibility [ as much from arthritis as the surgery] and I find the Biofins are forgiving when I use less than ideal leg motion. Also less likely to tire.
Good luck with your certification and surgery . I hope you find as much pleasure as I do with diving.

Hey Balicakes,
Welcome to the board and hope you find interesting and informative forums along with lots of great and friendly people.

I just now have an Open Water student who has had both hips replaced and does not seem to have any problems of difficulties.

Make sure you give us some more informatin on your profile, so responses can have better local content and other SB members in your area can find you easier

cheers,
Maria

Thanks for your advice. This past week-end I purchased an Apoll diving mask along with a Tusa Snorkel. I'll start practicing tomorrow in our pool. I'm a strong swimmer however getting use to the large mask (compared to swim goggles) will be quite a change along with no nose plugs. I'll wait until the class to test fins. I'm hooked on the Oceana split fin but before spending $185. prefer to test them among other.

Another question: is it possible for my husband to take the padi class w/o becoming certified? He has exercised induced asthma therefore his snorkeling is limited to mam. 10 feet. He would like to know all the details since he'll be with me when we take vacations.

Many thanks.

I see the profile - how do I go back in and edit? I didn't see it when I signed up? Sorry about that. I'm thoroughly encouraged with your responses and thanks to all of you. Our friend dived in Monterey this past week-end with the boat returning followed by three killer whales - she said it was totally awesome along with very cold water.
