Hi all,

new to this forum...actually am not really sure I should be here! I am 'only' a snorkeller and had just bought myself some new Scubapro Nova fins today for my snorkelling trip to the Maldives tomorrw...and was readiing up about them on this forum and one thing led to another and here I am registered in scuba board! Maybe one day when I find the time...I shall learn to dive...but for now snorkelling will do....

roll on the maldives!

Welcome to the ScubaBoard! You are in the right place as you have an interest in going further under the water than just "bobbing about". Seek out a local dive shop and ask for an introductory course. In PADI it's called a "Discover Scuba" experience. Minimal cost and you'll be hooked!

Hi wbsailor!

There is a place just for snorkeling here- under Diving Central, choose Snorkeling/ Freediving.
Lots of people love it. I only spearfish while snorkeling, and love the unencumbered hours freediving to 20-30 feet.

Also, any Discover Scuba program should be FREE, unless there are few LDS and few pools in your area.

Hi Tardigrade
Thanks for the info. I just went to the Maldives and stayed in the HIlton Irufushi resort...the snorkelling was very good..mainly due to the many fish species there. The coral was not as nice as Similans or the Barrier Reef though.

I did try the Discover Scuba for a few minutes and enjoyed it enough to try the 1 hour dive with the instructor. This was an 'eye-opening' experience! I have to say that whilst going deeper showed me more coral/ferns, the only added fish I saw was a feather tailed stingray. I do remember that it feels a little bit stressful to remember all the things one has to do whilst diving and feeling quite relieved when I returned to land.

I feel that snorkelling prob allows me to see 80-90% of what a diver sees for much less mental stress! :) I was tempted to get PADI certified but am not so sure now...

Welcome to Scuba Board. The most important thing is for you to be comfortable. If you do decide to try scuba and get certified you will most likely find that with experience that mental stress goes away and you get hooked.

But, theres nothing wrong with being a snorkler either, I enjoy that when in the tropics myself. Have fun!
