I have just joined scubaboard and thought I should introduce myself.

I have been diving for three years now (I know, only a baby in diving terms!!) and have been lucky enough to dive in Jamaica, Maldives (liveaboard), Spain and off the Northern Ireland coast.

Heading to the Red Sea for a liveaboard at the end of the month! Happy days!!!

Hi Diveninjajim!!! Welcome to the world of diving and ScubaBoard!!

How is the diving in Northern Ireland?

Hello from GB in Australia, Sydney. Check out my profile for all that info. I hope to continue my diving education early next year with my avid interest in rebreathers finally coming to fruition, with both a course and purchase. If you're down my way, drop me a line on my email and see if we can connect up. I can show you some of the prettiest dives in sydney surrounds.

Thanks for the welcome.

Diving is Northern Ireland is good. I dive around the Ballycastle/Portstewart area which is up at the top. Around Rathlin Island, which is beside Ballycastle there are quite a few wrecks from WW2. Some are quite broken up but some are in good shape. If you like wrecks then you will love it, some good stories with them. If you like a lot of marine life then I would have to say it's a bit hit and miss.

The vis can be good, not Maldives good but good for here (sometimes 10m) or it can be quite poor (a couple of metres). It's cool so primarily dry suit diving. I dive with Aquaholics, based in Portstewart; great guys and great instructors; I would definitely recommend them if you decide to dive here.

So how is diving in the States?

Thanks GB I'll definitely look you up if I'm ever in your part of the world. Obviously the diving in Australia is world renouned so it would be good to have a guide to the best in that area.

Rebreathers eh, expensive setup costs but they do open up a much greater variety of dives for you. Good for you mate!

Hi Diveninjajim, i'm from your neck of the woods, near Belfast.

Read that you're soon going to be diving the Red Sea - that's where i got certified - you won't be disappointed I promise you. Was very interested to hear about you're diving adventures around the Ballycastle area.....i'm hoping to take the plunge into cold Strangford Lough lol

Getting certified in warm water is great; I certified in Jamaica. Diving in cold water with less vis I felt helped my diving as it widened my experience and helped my nav. It also makes diving in warm clear water seem like a breeze!

I'm looking forward to the red sea. 2 weeks tomorrow!!!

It's handy for you having Strangford on your doorstep. I hear there are some wrecks there. The strong currents should also make for some interesting drift dives.

Good luck with it. Let me know how it goes for you.

Hello again! Have you dived since your last post? Did you try Strangford lough or are u going to just save it for abroad?

Hello. Quite new to ScubaBoard (just read threads for info and only registered lately).

One reason I joined the forum is to a) learn more about diving in general; and b) find out what diving on the North Coast and other parts of NI is like? I have been in Aquaholics but haven't dived with them. All my dives have been abroad in warm, high viz seas.
