Welcome to the snorkelling and freediving forum, Grateful2One. I've never scuba- or free-dived, but I'm a lifelong snorkeller with a passion for the pastime. Like you, I do all my aquatic activity close to where I live. The North Sea is 8 miles from my home. What are the waters like in your area of New Jersey? I'm afraid the only place I've been in NJ is Newark International Airport, where I was taken by bus many years ago from JFK Airport, most of whose flights had been cancelled due to weather conditions, to catch a plane to the Twin Cities in Minnesota.

waters are nice...very similar to Long Island New York, 7080 degrees in the summer, to icy frigid in the winter... visibility can run from 3" - 20'. Beaches are beautiful white sand, good surfing, and great fishing. Striped bass, Tautog, Seabass, Fluke, Bluefish, and Trigger fish are main targeted species. Do you spearfish? Newark is a far cry from south Jersey...Its kind of a hellhole compared to where I live. haha Im not a fan of the city.

Concerning Newark, I agree with you. The airport reminded me of Luton Airport here in the UK, which package airlines used as a substitute for London's airports, which I find equally grim.

I was sure that there must be more to the state of New Jersey and you've certainly painted a wonderful, enticing picture! No, I don't spearfish. The spot where I snorkel in North East England has little in the way of flora or fauna, apart from seaweed and the occasional small jellyfish. There's a warning in the nearby car park about keeping dogs away from seal pups, but the nearest seal colony is many miles north. I snorkel for the exercise, the morning sunrise and the beautiful view of the fishermen's chapel on the hill at the edge of the bay.

There is an underwater hunting forum here on Scubaboard, and if you find there isn't enough traffic here on the snorkelling/freediving forum, pay a visit to the Deeper Blue forum at

DeeperBlue Forums - Powered by vBulletin

which focuses on breath-hold diving.
