I'm a Fish!
Hey, I'm new ish to Scuba. Was certified 2 years ago and haven't had much time to dive. Getting back into it at school. Plan on going as far as I can thru NAUI thru NC State, and hopefully plan on becoming a tech diver as a career. Just bought my own gear which is exciting, and looking forward to meeting some cool people. Learning how to do my own reg service is also high on the list. I do my own sax repair and it's saved me a bunch of money, and I imagine this will as well.

Welcome to the board Tom.
The 5th annual get together of the NC Divers is Oct 3 at the Rolesville quarry, about 45 minutes north of NCSU. That would be a great time to meet and dive with a bunch of the local divers, including a bunch of DIYers and tech divers. Consider yourself invited.

Would love to make it, but I have to be in Laurinburg for the Highland Games. I'm an avid bagpiper and had already committed to be there. Would love to make another get together at some point in the spring though. Do you know Matt Rever off hand? He's my current instructor

Sorry you can't make it. I have got to get to the games one of these years....there are a bunch of McBrides in my family.
I don't know the instructors at NCSU. I DM for Down Under and I know a lot of the NCSU students get their gear from us. DU has an active dive club, we meet the second tues of every month except Dec when we have a big Christmas party, non members are always welcome. It's a great place to meet the locals and get some new dive buddies.

The NC dive bunch is very active and always welcoming so feel free to jump in with us any time. Some of us are diving pretty much all year round and there is alway a big Jan 1 new years dive.....most of the time I just come to eat the chilli and watch them turn blue. :)

Haha. The New Years dive sounds fun. I'm from New England originally, and when we were in the 80* pool the other day and people were shivering after 20 mins I was laughing hysterically. I'm actually diving with socks instead of booties for class. My feet were roasting in the 3mm booties... I'll try to make it to one of the meetings. Our bagpipe band rehearses Tuesday nights, so I may just bail on one of those.

I'll definitely consider joining the club though. I'm hoping to make a career out of this, so any help and contacts I can get will be beneficial.

Next weekend is the last DU club monthly outing for this year, call the shop for more info if you care to get in a few quarry dives.

Cool. Will do. Also saw somewhere that you use a prescription mask. I'm considering this but don't know if I should go all out and get custom Rx lenses or if off the shelf ones will work. I usually dive with contacts, but I'm going through AOWD right now and our instructor is making us do a lot of no mask drills where we need to keep eyes open so no contacts allowed.

It depends on your prescription. If it's a simple diopter or 2 then off the shelf works ok, on the other hand if it's more complicated (I have a strange combo plus bifocals...getting old sucks) then a custom prescription one makes sence.

Big Joe is BBQing at the outing, worth coming for the food alone and it's a good chance to meet a bunch of the locals. I will be with a class but do drop by and say hello if you come...if not with the class I will be easy to spot, not likely anyone else will be diving a old double hose reg with yellow hoses. :)

Just joined today and I'm just down the road in Durham and a State grad from 04. I probably won't be doing any more dives this year, but will probably start up again in the spring. Let me know if you are interested.
