Heading to Heron island this December. Going to dive for a few days. This is my first time out there. Any tips or suggestions? I understand the reef is still in pretty good shape compared to other parts of the GBR.

Do as much snorkelling as you can.
Under the jetty at low tide and on the reef flats at high tide. I spent a year on Heron and some of my best memories are from snorkelling as much as diving.

3mm will be fine if not too much, water can be 29 degrees celsius in summer.
Make sure you get up early and watch the sunset at shark bay, you may even see nesting turtles
