I was on a liveaboard dive trip with my Hero 3 Black in December when the firmware update came out thus I didn't have the update but the camera worked well (see video Test: GoPro Hero 3 Black Camera SCUBA Dive Video - YouTube)

Earlier this week I did successfully install the update before my current dive trip and guess what? On the first dive yesterday the camera recorded the first video but then froze ... I could not record, I could not turn it off, I had to remove the battery to shut it off! I tried again today with the same results. I wish I had not performed the update.

I've learned their firmware updates can be dangerous on my hero 2.
I have an original Hero and a Hero 2 ... I had so much trouble with original Hero that I decided not to update my H2 because it was working OK ... I should have done the same with H3 but some of the advanced features of Black edition for which I paid extra (WiFi, for instance) were not enabled when they shipped it to me and would only work if I updated, so I did!

I have had the same issues as the OP. I find that if I try to stop the video it can freeze at times. Now I just let it run constantly. Hopefully it will get worked out in the next update.

it can freeze at times. Now I just let it run constantly.
That is what I did with Hero 1 when it had a similar problem (now fixed). Constant running is not really feasible for me because (1) as a practical matter it is nearly impossible to watch and edit 30+ hours of video that I would generate from a typical dive trip, (2) the expense of having enough memory cards and spare batteries on hand is too high for me, and (3) I don't want to open the case, let alone the back, to pull out and replace the battery and/or memory card when I'm out on the water ...

I would like to simply reinstall the original firmware that I know works, but do not know how to obtain it (of course, I've submitted my problem to tech support but no reply as yet).

Try formatting the memory card directly in the camera. I had the same problem and that seems to have fixed things.

I do that before every dive now and it seems to work.

Try the manual update method and reformat the card
a lot of the issues with the black are
1. USB related to the type of USB and Gopro dont like many of them. I never connect my camera to a PC
2. Card Related. Especially if you format the card on any other device.
