I must admit, right now I'm numb and in a state of shock. I've just heard on ESPN that Herb Brooks, the head coach of the U.S. Ice Hockey team at Lake Placid in 1980, was killed in an automobile accident today. Brooks led the USA to the greatest upset in the history of sports, when the team defeated the USSR, 4-3, in the medal round of the hockey competition. Two days later (with my 20th birthday sandwiched in between), the U.S. defeated Finland to win its first gold medal in 20 years. It seems incredible that he's gone.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
