My mate Sytze was out on the boat working as any other day when he saw this illegal fishing going on. He got some photographs and sent them in to HEPCA. They took action and this is the result. (Cut from HEPCA News Letter)
Fishing vessels grounded
HEPCAÃÔ battle against depletion of Red Sea fish stocks is steadily moving in the right direction. Trying to secure large areas of the Red Sea as ůo-take zones is proving difficult, but far from impossible. A number of approvals, consents and signatures have been obtained, and a full decree could be issued in a soon to be held meeting between all affected parties.
The most tangible result so far has been the stopping of two fishing vessels from Suez, operating illegally in the Red Sea. The El Dawoody Zeyada and El Motaz Bilallah have had their operating licenses revoked for six months. Currently, overfishing is the biggest threat to the Red Sea and the stopping of these vessels should serve as a clear warning to other perpetrators, that HEPCA will take the necessary action.
Many thanks to Sytze of TGI diving, Mahmoud Ibrahim of Twin Dolphin and J?gen of Barracuda, Safaga for reporting the incidents and taking excellent and usable pictures.
Thanks also to the Red Sea Governor, Gen. Magdy el Qubaisey and the coastguard for their swift and more than adequate response.
