Hi Scott I'm shooting basically 1/125 F11 iso 200 (as lowest for D50) and the z240 are 0n .8 -what do you think ? are there better settings ?

i've used my 10-17 with z240's & D90 for a about 6 dives on the GBR and on fringing island reefs.
i also start most dives on 125 f11 or f13 iso 200 pic colour vivid and preset manual white control with extra red and yellow added. i'm using a nexus housing with TTL so when i increase from f11 to f13 or higher i increase my strobe power by a couple of power settings.
when i shoot up i start with 125 f16 ...... also 160 f11 has worked.
i took a nice cave pic & to capture the light streaminG i used 160 with f7.1
i took a nice close up with static subject nearly touching the dome & best result was 200 f29 !!
i'm doing heaps of experimenting & looking what the experienced guys are doing..they say it takes 10,000 pics to get a really good handle on it..so i'd better go do more diving.
p.s like your pic of the star fish.

hey bax, the proper settings can depend on many factors (light levels, distance to subject, depth of field needed, etc.). Roby gave some great examples.

most smugmug galleries allow to see the settings of the photos by putting your cursor over the photo and clicking on photo info. I have many 10-17mm shots here in my underwater gallery, and in this guide, where you can see the settings.

hope this helps
Scott

G'day BAX,

I start with ISO100, f8, scutter speed between 1/100th-250th. I havnt adjusted any of the camera settings in my D90. I do often have to add a little bit of red in the highlights when editing colour balance. Strobes full power.

Most important with the 10-17mm especially at 10mm is strobe placement. You dont want to get any hots spots or shadows where you dont want them. Play with your strobe positioning to get the effect your after.

Regards Mark

Nice shots Bax. What camera are you using and what kind of dome port are you shooting with? I notice that the shots are all portrait orientation. Did you shoot in that orientation or are the images cropped? I'm wondering how the corner sharpenss of that lens is given it is presumably a rectilinear lens (which you can tell if the images were originally landscape cropped to portrait). Did you use any sort of corrective dioptres?

Oops, sorry, my mistake. Somehow I was thinking this was the new nikon DX wide angle zoom. As a fisheye then, a diopter isn't going to be as necessary than on a rectilinear lens.
