I am new to under water photography, well i am yet to take a pic under water. I have a nik 5 that seems to be working properly. i have played with it around the house and would really like to have it serviced so i could use it. I am also wanting to get a digital as well. I was wonder if anyone is still working on the nik 5 cameras, and also i need some tips on which new digial cam i should invest in and i will be working on a tight budget. Thanks for the help

How tight is your budget?
If you're a Nikon person IMHO any of the current Nikon Digital SLR's would work for you - really depends on who you go with to house the camera for u/w use.
My case: I spent nearly $900 for a Nikon D90 and 18-55 mm lens which I bought off EBay - it was a demo model and I bought it through the non bid process of Buy It Now.
Then I spent over $1,400 for an Ikelite housing and port plus an additional $400 for the low end strobe.
I had Nikonos film cameras and flash bulb (BC) flash in the past and last year purchased a Nikonos V and SB-105 strobe prior to my trip to Australia in March of 2009, because I thought that renting an u/w digital camera would cost too much - boy was I wrong! Just the processing and printing of the film (with a CD of course) cost over $100 AUD and THEN I had to find room for all that bulk in my luggage on the return!:shocked2: Hindsight showed that it would have cost me not much more than what I spent on processing/printing to rent a digital u/w camera AND I would have had room in the luggage for some souvenirs (which the photos are that too):bonk:
Read the posts and cruise on over to see what cameras the housing manufacturers are making housings for and what the Nikons are selling for on EBay will give you some ideas and prices. After all that you may want to go low end non DSLR fixed focus underwater digital.
Good luck - regards
Richard

Do you know if anyone is still servicing the NIK 5 , it has not been in the watet in a while and i really do not want to fllood it.

I have a Nikonos V in storage somewhere. If you have average skills as a photographer, I would bet that a free Nikonos + film + developing is more expensive than a new point-and-shoot digital, if you average the cost over the number of "keeper" photos you get. It gets even more expensive if you decide to scan your slides for the web--I have a Nikon Coolscan in the same storage bin. Which shouldn't discourage you: film photography will be good practice and SB105 strobes can be used with a DSLR set-up if you later decide to go that route.

Thanks for all the help. My Nikonos V was my dads and that is the main reason I wouuld be interested in shooting with it from time to time. I think the strobe and tray are likelite brand. I played with the nikon cool pic L20 at a dive shop last week have got the itch to start taking some under water pics. Would you be interested in getting rid of the Coolscan? I have 20 or 30 slide trays full of nice pics from Adros i would like to made digital.

No, but thanks for asking. I have thousands of un-catalogued slides and some of them are probably worthy of scanning. It's one of those projects I keep promising myself I'll get to. Plus, if I sold you that scanner for what it's worth now I'd have to admit that I squandered a lot of money for yet another expensive toy that I'd barely used. :D

I'm still shooting NikV w/ 15mm lens. I am simply not ready to go digital yet. The quality isn't there in comparison. For as often as I shoot while on the dive, it's not worth it for me to go digital yet from a financial standpoint. I'm pretty frugal with my film, so unless I see a shot I think I want, I don't take. Film teaches you to "see" and compose, as opposed to shooting willy-nilly in every direction with digital.

If you haven't already, send your camera off to Bob at Southern Nikonos. You will get top notch work, and a nice little lecture to go with. :D Plus his site has a WEALTH of information about the camera you've just adopted.
