I'm trying to change the white balance in my A620 for underwater shooting, but I'm having trouble doing so. I'm following the manual's instructions but I can't choose AWB from the menu. I can see the option but it won't let me sekect it. I have restored all the settings to original default values. What am I doing wrong?

Which camera mode are you in? If you are in "Auto" or "Scn" mode you can't switch the white balance setting.

If you are in one of the other modes like Manual and you hit the "Func Set" button in the center of the directional pad you should be able to select the white balance settings on the left sidebar with the directional keys.

Thanks a lot for your help RIOceonographer. That's exactly what I was doing wrong. I was trying to change the setting in Auto mode.
