Help Converting NEF to Anything Else (or open in PS 7)

I've got a friends NEF files on my harddrive that I'd like to open. I'm using PS 7.0. There is a file for opening NEFs in PS CS on the Adobe website, but not for 7.0.

I've tried a few converters I've downloaded, but they only end up giving me the thumbnail (Picasa2, RealConveter).

Help!

You can try the (horribly named) GIMP
GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

GIMP - for Windows

Basically a free Photosop-type application

I believe it will read my D300 NEF's so you may be in luck (and the price is right

I think you can download a free version of Nikon Capture that will convert them, then finish the job in PS7. The capture program came free with my D300, and it's really nice, so that's what I do. I think they have a minimized version or 90 day sample for free download.

IIRC, I believe Microsoft has an NEF powertoy for XP. Dunno if it lets you save as JPG though...

The more replies the better right? Here is another way that works for many different file types. Then you can convert them into anything you want. Adobe DNG converter.

Oh yes, more is better.

I downloaded Nikon Capture NX, and when I try to open a file, I get the following error:

"Invalid Color Format."

I'll try DNG...
