Hi all!

I need advice, preferably from the women, on what BC they like. I'm retiring my old one (Dacor), and am a little overwhelmed by the choices. The ones I've gotten recommendations on are the Scubapro Ladyhawk, the Aqualung Diva, and the Zena (not sure who makes this), and Oceanic Isla.

Anyone have any preferences? I guess my main question is how people feel about the back-inflate style - love it or hate it? Do you wind up feeling very face-down a lot?

Thanks!
Diana

Hi Diana and welcome to SB. I dive an SP knighthawk and do not have a face down feeling. I can actually kick back and rest while at the surface. I have heard good things about the Ladyhawk, but can't give you any first hand advice. Anyway welcome to SB and you will be sure to get alot of input on your question.

Hi Diana and welcome.

You might try searches for the BC’s you are considering. I don’t have a lot of experience with BC’s and can only tell you this.
I like my Seaquest Diva LX and one reason I chose it was for upright stability. One I had in class I was face down on the surface and I really did not like that at all, sorry don’t remember what it was. I also had a problem with a sternum strap choking me on the surface and it seemed to really make me shy away from them. That maybe just me, putting my mask around my neck bothers me too.
I was considering the Ladyhawk because of what I’d read about vest vs minimal but I’m shortwaisted, it rode on my hips and I really wanted usable pockets.I also looked at the Isla. I couldn’t open or close the smaller pockets without a lot of difficulty, it had only 2 pull dumps and had the sternum strap. Couldn’t try either wet unfortunately.

This thread http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=97596 about fit really helped me feel I made a good choice for me.

I got to try the Diva and was happy, 2 similar body type female instructors liked theirs so that settled it for me. It is heavier. But I wanted pockets because I don’t like things dangling, and I can get my gloved hand into and out with something in it and pull the zipper with one hand. I think I’m getting a better understanding of the jacket bulk complaint but I don’t feel constrained or have any complaint, but I’m not doing anything technical either. When I really fill it up on the surface it is a bit ‘stuffy’ but I haven’t needed to yet, that may be more of an issue in rougher water. It was the roughest so far today and I was fine with 3 full blows. The main reason I got the LX was the fastex clip for the weight pockets, I just don’t trust Velcro in long term usage and hope to avoid repairs (re bladder) with the initial expense. I liked the adjustability if I go where I need more wetsuit, I have no idea if a drysuit would work. I keep forgetting to have someone take a picture of me when I think I’m in a good position so I really don’t know. No one has mentioned it, I hope that indicates I’m not way off. I feel good, no problem hovering or maneuvering up and over or down and into with breathing and shifting. I messed with my weights a bit and equal distribution is what works. But again being new, I don’t have any OW other BC experience to compare with.
Best wishes.

The Zena is made by Zeagle. It has a very good reputation on this board. Sorry, I’m a man but I thought I’d throw the Mares Ariel into the mix. My gf is very happy with her Ariel (over a hundred dives so far) and has had no problems with the back inflation; she has been using it since her very first open water dive and feels that it is a huge improvement over the jacket style BC she used in the pool during training. She tried an Oceanic Isla and did not like it—she think that it is too cluttered at the front.

I knew someone who used a Ladyhawk. This BC has huge (too big, IMHO) weight pockets and no proper storage pockets (apart from a roll-up). The back bladder is bungied and is very compact when not inflated but is a more complicated design than the Mares Ariel.

My girlfriend uses a Mares Frontier Vera (I dunno if they still have this) and she loves it. You might want to consider it too. A couple of women divers that I know also use the Scubapro s-tek with the rectek wings and they love it. But I think scubapro has already gotten rid of this, but some distributors might still have it in stock (they still sell it in Hongkong I think)

I used to dive with a Diva and hated the fit on my body. I also didn't like the jacket style and having so much under my arms and across my front. I recently switched to a Zeagle Zena and am sooooo much happier! :)

The Zena is a back inflate but since I have no reason to inflate my BC all the way, I don't find that I get thrown on my face when on the surface. I find that adjusting trim and bouyancy with a back inflate is also easier since it automatically puts you in a horizontal position. I've also found that when on the surface I just lean back slightly and "lounge" if I have to wait awhile, and if I do a surface swim, it's going to be on my back anyway.

For me, the super adjustability and comfort of the Zena was the major reason I chose it. I like that it is built using components that I can mix and match as my body changes shape (hopefully as I get slimmer and harder!), and that if I need to have small shoulder straps and a large front panel, I can do it. At this point I wear a medium across the board, but hopefully will need to buy a small front panel in another 6 months. ;) You can also simply have 2 different bladders for warm and cold water diving and just swap them out depending on what you're doing. I only dive warm, so the smaller bladder is perfect for me.

I can't see myself ever going back to the jacket style BC. I find that the cumberbun around the middle is too wide to adequately keep the BC from riding up on the shoulders when inflated at the surface. Also, because it is so wide, when I would cinch it down enough, it felt constricting across my entire body, and yet still didn't do the job well. I'm really a minimalist type of diver and can't stand having lots of bulk and don't carry lots of doo dads in my pockets etc. The Zena is very minimalist and although you can add pockets, it only comes with one to start.

Quite a few people have said negative things about the Zeagle's ripcord system for ditching weights. Since my husband has a SeaQuest jacket style, I've been able to compare side by side the Zeagle system to his. One thing we all know is that we hope to never need to ditch our weights in an emergency. If that happens, I decided that I won't care that it'll take me 2-5 min. to rethread my ripcord on my Zeagle. Also, I prefer that I put my weights into my pockets through zippers, unlike my husband who uses his release system each time to load and unload weights. He has to make sure that he's snapped his weight pockets back in, or he could lose a $35 pocket.

All that said, a BC is a very personal choice and one you should make carefully. Try on as many styles and types as you can, and even better would be to take them for a dive, even in a swimming pool. The best BC is the one that fits you best.

Thanks for all your advice! I dove this weekend using a rental Seaquest, so I got to try one new model at least (only 23 more to go!) But quite frankly, the flippin water was so cold (47), that my mind was on wetsuit vs drysuit at that moment. Cheers!

My wife dives using the Tusa Salene and likes it. Has raised cutout hips as well as a soft padded back pad. Works great for her.
