Hello to all:
I found this board and have done a lot of reading here for enjoyment...this place is like the back room of your favorite diving shop...except at no time does anyone say 'well, thats it, time to lock up and go home"
I would like to introduce myself: I am 41 and have been diving since i was 11 years old. I started with Naui OW and picked up all the Padi cards short of instructor. I got a commerical tickets when i was 25 and worked on rigs in the Gulf of Mexico contracting for Texaco...i did two years with AT&T/SSI in south east asia and a few years as a civilian diver for the Canadian Coast Guard out of Victoria. I've worked extensively for the aqauculture (fish farming) ops here on Vancouver Island off and on as much as i could handle it.
About 6 or 5 years ago i hung up my force fins and stopped diving as a job. I tried to buy a shop in Parksville here on Van Island...didn't turn out, so i bought into part of a nightclub instead and stopped diving and became a dedicated louche.
Early this summer i said 'whath'hell' and did some solo diving just to be in the water (am growing a gut and having problems with staying in shape).
BOOM, i'm in love again. The ocean is a integral part of my enviroment! So i'm back in. I've been surprised at how rusty i was after only short of a decade out of the water. Anyway, i know few people who sport dive (or dive spiritually) here...just pro divers...so it feels like i'm a virgin again...trying to find other sport divers who have that fascination with the blue. Because of that i went on the web to see what people are saying about diving in BC and found this board. I found the comments and discussions fascinating, and so i've joined the scuba board.
For years i've worked with ex military and hard core commercial divers and although i made ok pay and met a lot of cool people...in many ways it turned scuba into a technically demanding profession and not a intuitive and spiritual way of life i was looking for (i'm not inclined towards fascination for techno fetishistic lifestyles).
So now i'm a sport diver again. I'm interested if there are any divers out there who are considering diving on Vancouver Island as i'd like to hook up with people to explore my favorite holes and check out new ones.
So thats me and i'm a newbie on the board. Hope to chat with you all sometime.
