Hi everyone!

I'm Johan, after hearing a lot of nice stories about scuba diving, I'm now planning to get my diving's license in Egypt in February :)

Hope to learn a lot from you guys on the scubaboard forum and looking forward to geting my license.

I still have some doubts about whether I will be able to dive, as I have an open eardrum in my left ear. I'll be posting in the Diving Physics, Physiology, & Medicine forum

Cheers!
Johan

Welcome to ScubaBoard.
I still have some doubts about whether I will be able to dive, as I have an open eardrum in my left ear.
A big question is whether that can be repaired/patched. You don't want seawater getting behind your ear drum. Vertigo, infection risk, I imagine they'll get into it when you post in the other forum.

Thanks 😊, indeed I'm not sure how I can prevent getting seawater behind my eardrums.

Strongly recommend you contact DAN (Divers Alert Network) Europe. They should be able to recommend a doctor familiar with diving to examine you.

Welcome to SB! Great place for info and preparing your scuba-journey!
Where are you from, lot's of great places to start learning to dive here in NL (I'd even advice to get your certification here....when you can dive in the cold water with bad visibility, the warm nice waters of Egypt are much easier!)
Also, have a look at the region forums, there is a all-dutch thread there!

You booked your trip without seeing a doctor first to make sure you could definitely dive? What if it turns out you can’t dive?

I will take a good book 😄. The diving is only part of the trip. Even if diving would be possible for me, after for example surgery, I realize now it most certainly won't be possible next month.

However, even if diving next month won't happen, I still want to work out how I can solve my ear problem for future dives

Someone mentioned DAN, but you can always call the Duikmedisch Centrum, part of the Dutch Navy.

They can give you a free consult by phone, and forward you (doorverwijzing) to an specialist close to home without having to go through your family doctor. Something DAN can not do for you.

Thanks for the tip Martijn, didn't know DMC existed.

I know it's not exactly where you live, but if you don't live too far from the border of Belgium, I could recommend Dr. Paul Van der Eecken in Gent. He is an ENT specialised in scuba related ear-issues and trauma.

I got treated by him because I started getting chronic headaches after dives. Turns out my sinusses were squeezed into oblivion. The main thing is, about 80-90% of all his clients seem to be divers currently and he's an instructor himself.

So he's an ENT that will do whatever it takes to get you (back) to diving within the reasonable.
