Twelve years of diving all over the place under my belt. I’ve dove in Hawaii, most of the Caribbean, kelp diving in California, dove the warm (?) waters of Nova Scotia, the wrecks of Bermuda, the Florida Keys. The past 2 years, I’ve concentrated on diving off the coast of North Carolina along the Outer Banks. And of course, least we forget, Dutch Springs (local PA quarry) and New Jersey.

I hold Instructor rating through NAUI. And in November I'll be taking Instructing Handicaped Divers through HSA.

I got interested in diving after my brother-in-law got certified and showed me all his neat “stuff” for diving. I thought --I need more “stuff”. After I got certified my brother-in-law invited me and my two sons to join his family on a vacation to the Florida Keys. There would .be, for sure, some diving. My sons, not content on just sitting around asked me if they could become certified also. They got their certification in NJ and off we went.

We still do our family diving vacation every year. We usually choose some “exotic” destination and dive. Between my family and my sister’s family, there are now 18 divers. We usually find a boat that can handle this size group and virtually take it over for a week.

This has become a tradition that I don’t want to ever end. How else is a dad able to convince a 22 and a 25 year old to go on a family vacation?

I mentioned above that I will be relocating to Orlando, FL (looks like July - we sold our house in NJ just need the person who bought it to set the final settlement date). Looking forward to diving some of the Springs in Florida and maybe getting certified and involved with cave diving. What the heck! another challenge. If you don't keep the challenges comming what's life about?

Hi Louma, and welcome to SB!
18 divers in the family, wow! Never have to look very far for a dive buddy heh?
Moving to Florida where I hear the diving is fantastic too, check out these guys, they are more than happy to help you out with all the information you'll need for Florida diving.

Welcome Louma

I'm Joe (Cudachaser) from Cocoa Beach, Florida...60 miles east of Orlando. I'm also an instructor NASE and HSAI. We'll have to get together for some beach diving later this summer

Wow, NJ to FL - what a change that will be.

Welcome to ScubaBoard :D

Thanks for the welcome and the offer to dive. 60 miles is just around the corner for me. That's one of the reasons we're comming to Florida, I can be at some great dive sites within 3 hours. I tried to convince my wife that somewhere (anywhere) on the keys would be a great place to live but she nixed that idea saying that all I would do is dive all the time. I thought "what's wrong with that"? Then I looked at the housing prices WOW - 700 sq. ft. for $800,00 a little out of our league! Seriously, I'll put you in my address book and once settled - I'd like to take you up on your offer. We could compare notes about some of the more unusual students (and experiences) we've had. You know the only reason we teach is for the big bucks!

Let's see boats are boats, shores are shores, wrecks are wrecks, what will be different between NJ and FL oh I forgot 40 degree 0 viz water verses 70+ degree and 20 ft. to 150 ft vis. Yeah, a big change but one that I am REALLY ready for. Tired of carring doubbles on my back with a dry suit that needs 27 lbs of lead to sink it!

Thanks for the welcome.

Lou

We started out with 6 divers then a few other members of my family got certified. Then the nephews and nieces got married, their spouses wanted to dive so they got certified. It was a whole lot easier arranging a dive trip with 6 than it is for 18 but, it is a great way to keep the family in touch and at least once a year have a great vacation for divers and non divers alike. By the way, we still haven't been able to convince my sister to dive. She'll snorkel but has no interest in getting down with the fishes.

Thanks for the welcome.

Lou

By the way...Louma, I grew up near Medford Lakes (Clementon). Left at 18 never to return....I really love Florida

Joe

PS...Student stories, great idea...I could write book...hmmm maybe I will since I'm retired from NASA now

Welcome to Central Florida. I moved here from Kansas 4 years ago and don’t really miss diving the cold dark lakes of the Midwest, though I was diving 6 miles off shore from Cocoa Beach last weekend and the visibility was worse than some lakes following the high winds and storms we had earlier in the week.

HIya and welcome to Florida! Like others have mentioned, check out our local "club" here in the cyber world...the Florida Conch Divers! Only requirement for membership is living in Florida. This is where you will find info for the Florida divers. Also, in the Trips n Happenings section is where all the dive trips are listed. Any trip posted is an invitation to join the fun!
