Cheese Monkey
New
Hi guys, my names Ben, although Cheesey usually will suffices!
Me and my girlfriend both left our jobs 10 months ago to travel Asia and we haven't looked back since. A review of the budget 3 months ago turned up a decent lump spare to burn, and I've always been interested in diving.
We did our OW SSI in Koh Tao, Thailand with a truly excellent instructor and dive shop. We proceeded to the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia to do our advanced OW with another excellent shop, in preparation for Sipadan. Did 6 dives there in Borneo with a good outfit, Sipadan was completely mind blowing. Now just finished 9 fun dives in Tulamben, Bali, which has been incredible, although I could pick holes with the dive shop here. But it is cheap
. So 24 dives in total
We plan to do a 3 day liveaboard in Komodo, and we have a 3 day liveaboard booked in Cairns. So maybe around 45 dives by the time we head home.
I'm at the stage now where I feel like I want to hone and practice some of the skills, I feel comfortable in the water and I couldn't ask more of my girlfriend, my dive buddy. I would like to practice nav in particular, but all of the dives we have done and intend to do in Asia are guided. I believe the GBR will be unguided but relatively straightforward
Should I bother right now? Have potentially 10 dives to go on soon. Or wait to see if I get into it when I'm back home in the UK (if I can afford it). It feels a bit odd to ask a DM/instructor/guide who probably knows the site incredibly well if I can do the nav lol. Should probably stop thinking about it and think about the amazing marine life!
Either way I'm loving the underwater world, wrecks in particular!
