Hi ScubaBoard Businesses,
I'm Annette, a UK based PADI DM and I'm looking for a little help, in exchange for something of course!
I am in the process of developing a website for divers. We aren't live yet, but we will be at DiveNation
A bit about DiveNation
Essentially what will become a crowd sourced global dive site directory where divers can contribute their favourite dives, the dive site location and description; they can rate and comment on the dive site, upload photos and share these using a variety of social media channels. A Trip Advisor for DiveSites.
As we go live, divers will be able to log their dives, but I use the term loosely as it will be a quick log of where, when, what they spotted, photo and comments not the full dive logs we are used to. I may join forces in the medium term with an existing full online dive log provider if there is the demand however the point of the quick log is for divers to share their dives and contribute to the directory, nothing more.
Ive seen something like this before I hear you say? Well not quite nothing out there brings together Divers, Dive Sites, Dive Operators/Liveaboards and real time, divers logged, Marine Life sightings. So what does this mean for the diver? Want the chance to see a Seal, do a ripping drift or dive a great Wreck on your next local dive? or what about the chance to dive with Whale Sharks or Mantas next time you travel to dive? This is the site to visit bringing you real time information on indigenous and migratory/seasonal pelagic species which many divers would travel a long way for the chance to see and dive with. Want to find out who can take you diving in that location well, the information is all there.
Making Dives Count
Because I plan to present all of this information on a map using GPS location, I am able to share divers geo-tagged marine life sightings with a range of global conservation bodies, who collect and analyse data on marine life numbers and geographic distribution. Therefore, if you log your dives with DiveNation, all divers get to contribute something important to the marine environment. Data partners include OBIS, GBIF and Shark Trust and I am sure this list will grow. This aspect of the site is nicely aligned with Project Awares re-launch.
Where do you come in?
To ensure the location of the marine life sighting data is as robust as possible, I am looking for partners in key diving locations around the world, to share the GPS points of the dive sites they visit, so that when divers tag what they have seen, it comes with a reliable GPS point/geo-tag which marine conservation bodies can use. I havent yet concluded whether to make the GPS points public or private I would welcome your thoughts and I am in a position where I can publish some and not all. So, essentially I am looking for a list of dive sites with accurate GPS points if you have other information regarding depths/vis/site descriptions, that would be great, but secondary.
Feedback I have had from some operators about this type of website is that the info can be inaccurate or lose relevance over time...I am hoping that by engaging local operators in both the content/info and use of the site...for the benefit of all, it will become and remain a rich source of information for divers.
As the website is still under construction, I have put together a short screen shot presentation of how some parts of the site will look. Please just click below and take a short tour
Introducing DiveNation
In return for this information, I can offer you a very nice presence on the website in the locations you serve, including a permanent hyperlink back to you in all of the dive sites you provide info for. In addition you can have a business user profile so that if you choose, you can create your own Dive Map, use the site, log your own dives, make use of the Mobile App and social media functionality and much more...
More importantly, you will help me to achieve my goal and will have my undying gratitude! You may (or may not) be interested in a bit of info about me I qualified as a DM in the icy waters of the UK and not long afterwards, became Mum to now 18 month old twins. Ive spent 13 years working in and running my own Recruitment Business in London and after the Twins arrived, thought it was time to work doing something I love. And as I dont have as much time to dive as I used to, this is the closest thing to it.
It would be great to have your thoughts and feedback on both the idea and importantly, I would love to hear from anyone out there who would like to be involved and provide me with the information I am looking for.
You can either DM me here at ScubaBoard or email me at info@divenation.com.
I hope to hear from you.
Thanks,
Annette
