"President Bush on Thursday is expected to announce plans to create the world's largest marine protected area — a group of remote Hawaiian islands that cover 84 million acres and are home to 7,000 species of birds, fish and marine mammals, at least a quarter of which are unique to Hawaii."

Yay!

It is a good thing, I've included the link from MSN.com for those who want to read it... What do the divers in Hawaii have to say? Is this a step, how are the conservation efforts in Hawaii?

From the news article:
A turning point came in April, when Bush sat through a 65-minute private White House screening of a PBS documentary that unveiled the beauty of — and perils facing — the archipelago's aquamarine waters and its nesting seabirds, sea turtles and sleepy-eyed monk seals, all threatened by extinction.

The film seemed to catch Bush's imagination, according to senior officials and others in attendance. The president popped up from his front-row seat after the screening; congratulated filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the late underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau; and urged the White House staff to get moving on protecting these waters.

"He was enthusiastic," Cousteau said. "The show had a major impact on him, the way my father's shows had on so many people. I think he really made a discovery — a connection between the quality of our lives and the oceans."

I think it's great that this preserve is being created, but isn't it a little troubling that our national policy seems to be determined by what videos the POTUS watches?

No not really it takes what it takes to get results, Good for Hawaii and good for the country, Thank You to the President

I imagine that's a load of BS. We all know national policy is determined by the videos Cheney watches.

This definitely seems like a good thing, but given the history of the administration, I am left wondering, what's the catch?

As far as diving, a NWHI liveaboard would definitely rule, but I can't imagine where it would depart from. It'd be a long ride from Kauai.

I am also glad that the monument will be given a Hawaiian name.

Wow, a good news point for the environment...somebody pinch me... :)

Agree but while you're at it, thank the many other people who have worked over the last decade or two to get this area so designated. Glad Bush jumped on the bandwagon and kudos to Jean-Michel et al. for the push.

You mean those X-rated ones no one at the video rental store will talk about? After all, we're definitely getting screwed! NOTE: Intended as humor, not a political statement... but take it as you wish!

Thanks to all and the President
