just trying to see how many out there have had a close
encounter of the toothy type

yup... the only time anything underwater has ever hurt me was when a damselfish
(a bicolor one, if i remember correctly) bit the crap out of my pinkie for no reason...

i was just swimming along...

Hmmm... would an "abrasion" or a "hickey" from a horn shark count? They don't have teeth, but if you get them mad enough, they will GUM the HECK out of that soft spot between your thumb and forefinger ... um ... not that I would know first hand... ;)

I got an abrasion injury from a whale shark tail once. It took the skin off no scarring unfortunately.

Oh yeah, I have a mate called "Ken the hairy *******" that had the end of his finger bitten off by a pufferfish in Fiji.

You too Andy??? I get attacked by damsels all the time on my favorite beach dive site, Datura at Lauderdale by the Sea. Only that now I fight back.. ;)

My instructor once almost lost his ear lobe to a bluegill in a quarry. We didn't think it would ever stop bleeding. Yeah, well ...... it wasn't a shark........ but....... it is an entertaining story.......

Oh, hey... found my copy of the 2003DANDR report ... I guess there was ONE diver in 2003 that had a shark bite...

2003DANDR.pdf Page 122; Apendix B, 01-50
Experienced Technical Diver separated from buddy, possible shark attack. Cause of Death: Drowning

I won't put the whole case here, but the body was recovered four days later with evidence of animal predation, one area contained hemmorrhage, which they say would mean the bite happened while the diver was still alive.

Hmmm....

Sigh... I'm STILL waiting to see my first one u/w in the open seas!

I have been nipped by Damsel Fish --while on a research project, by Yellowheads -- trying for the eggs of the Damsel fish on the same project, and by some other small (yet still to be identified fish) on the same project!

No sharks.... though you know I've heard they exist out there ;)

Yes, I get hurt by sharks all the time... that is my "feelings" get hurt all the time by sharks... they just won't stay still long enough for me to get a good picture of one! I have so many pictures of the butt ends of sharks... (sigh...)
