Not diving but I have helped a baby sea turtle get past the surf line and rescued an octopus from an unusually high storm caused tide pool... I spotted it because it had inked!

It's over: stranded whales saved - National - smh.com.au

It was cold...freezing cold...but worth the 4 hour stint I did in the water - the community spirit kicked in we even had people bringing down food and hot coffee and soup - amazing feeling after a lot of moments where it didn't look good. Quite a party on the beach when it was all over too.

Great topic!

About four years ago we were diving from a small charter boat off one of California's Channel Islands for a technical training class. The site was the wreck of a purse seiner type fishing boat sitting upright on the sandy sea floor at about 150 feet.

Conditions were excellent. When we reached the wreck we found it thickly covered by abandoned fishing nets. Trapped within the old nets was a three foot long leopard shark. A beautiful creature.

Two of the more experienced divers immediately took out their knives and started to cut the shark free. They gave up the dive they'd planned to help the poor animal. After about five minutes of heavy work, an opening was made in the nets, and the shark swam free. It was a thrilling sight, and one of the most heart-warming things I've ever seen underwater.

It's not very macho to say, but I still tear up a little when I think about it, even now.

I guess now that you mention it. When it is low tide I like to see if there are any stranded octopus or larger type fish I need to move before people start messing with them or even trying to take them home.

One killer removed from the water, another escapes

We cut many dead and a few still living animals from a massive gill net abandoned a few miles off Los Angeles Harbor. The net was finally removed a month later.

I dug a lobster out of the sand, put it back it water and it stil had enough life to swim off. Probably right into a lobster trap, but that's life.

Wow I remember this incident, glad to hear you were a part of that amazing effort. Your intervention and that of all those who volunteered that day really demonstrated the power of human compassion for animals in need.
When we unite and take immediate action, we can intervene and become the protectors instead of the abusers of these amazing animals of the sea!!!
