hello,

i´m looking for people who have been diving at the islands of socorro of the coast of mexico.
me and a couple of friends are planing on sailing to these remote islands around january on a private sailing yacht, departing from puerto vallarta. so we need to gather all the information we can get such as diving spots, anker spots, weather conditions at this time of the year, currents, permits etc., simply everything that contributes to our safety and fun.
any kind of information, advice, recommendation based on personal experience is greatly appreciated!!
best regards from puerto vallarta,

adil

Yes,

We begin the 09-10 season in November.

We have the last trip to isla Guadalupe on the 2nd of Nov and then we start making our way south to Cabo San Lucas to beging with the season in the Revillagigedos.

You will be needing permits from the reserve (Comision Nacional de Areas Naturales Protegidas) to be able to visit and dive the area (no landing ). It is also necessary to check in with the navy base at Socorro as you arrive in the archipelago.

Actually just yesterday Alicia received the news from the Cal Academy of sciences about the article on a new species she found a few years back in the islands (see attachment). This new species has been named after the amazing isla Socorro.

Here are a few links to images and videos from past seasons

good luck. I don't know if you can get permission to dive there from a private vessel. You could contact the Solmar V Socorro Liveaboard diving aboard Solmar V - Giant Mantas, Sharks and Humpback Whales at the Socorro Islands and Sea of Cortez to see if they would help. I know on the trips the liveaboards do they have to check in with the military base on Socorro Island so I have to assume you would also need to. I have seen private vessels out there on at least one trip I did on the solmar but no idea what is involved here. I believe its a marine reserve so you might check with the Mexican authorities in charge of the area. Mexico Stands Tough on Island Fisheries Closure
gives some names etc.

I have to agree with the above. I used to help out on the SolMarV and it's reaallly hard to get private vessels around those islands. Keep in mind that there are no place to touch land and the security is very tight and a little intimidating with there guns.
