I have just started diving, six months ago, and wish I had started many years ago. Can anyone recommend good dive boats in the Kona area? How about around the rest of the Big Island? Watch for me in the water!!

Jack's, Honu and Charlie's have the nicest boats. By this, I mean, bigger, more stable and more comfortable. You also see them farther up and down the coast. The farther from Kona you get, the better the areas are. Make sure you get in at least one of the manta night dives, awesome. The black water dives seem to be more of a gimmick to get tourists to keep signing up after they're all mantaed out. Too hit or miss for the price. The video and photo they show you might have taken a year to get. This isn't what you see on every dive.

Another vote here for Jack's Diving Locker and the manta dives. Keller at Jack's runs a manta research foundation, so he knows a TON about the manta's which makes the experience even better IMO.

Welcome. I've been on the Big Island a couple of months and rediscovered diving after a long dry spell in the mountains. Trying to network some dive buddies. Have my AOW, my own gear and dive as much as possible. Let me know if your looking to do the same. Charters can be great but they can run you out of "Fun Tickets" in a hurry.
