Not sure this is the right place but...

I was reading TSandM trip report last night, great read by the way, and I thought it would be a good idea to have a comprehensive guide on underwater communication, not just hand signals, but signals with lights for example.
A video demonstration of signals would be great, wouldn't it?

The owner of rEvo gave me a "it's very silted out in there" hand signal once as I was ready to enter the wreck, I remember at the time the message being very clear and unmistakable, but I cannot remember how the signal was. Like TSandM, last week I had the same situation where I was trying to tell my buddy to speed up, he understood the message, but did not do it, bastard.

So, even though I realize there is different ways of saying the same thing, which inevitably will create debate, welcome to internet forum, it might be a good idea to have a source where as many light/hand signals are comprised in, oh yeah, I should ask, does it exist already?

So then, anyone wants to take on the project? Creating a series of wonderful videos of underwater communication?

In the mean time, I guess we can fill in descriptions of handy(no pun intended) signals to make our communications more efficient.

I remember seeing a good website once that had a lot of different hand signals in videos or pictographs. Unfortunately I can't seem to find where I saved the link.

I happen to like this video

If we're about to jump off a boat for a DM-lead tour, I like to go over his/her hand signals for common life in the area.

I guess he wasn't expecting to come across a cleaning station, but when he got there, he started scrubbing his armpits one by one with his hands... hehehe cleaning station... we got it... very creative :)

I've seen that one James, thanks.
Even though I think a complete guide is ideal, specially for the novice, I was personally looking forward to the more advanced ones, specially on tech and cave.

Would it happen to be this site? http://www.thescubasite.com/Learn-To-Scuba-Dive/scuba-diving-hand-signals

To be honest, I'm all about hand signals for maintaining safety and an adherence to the dive plan (or a change of plan), but I'm not a big fan of creating another language. I mean that I'd rather learn regular American Sign Language than a random scuba language if I had to learn a hundred different signals. Might just be me being lazy, but I'd think that specific signals for random, not-so-important events might lead to confusion.

Cave Diving (and technical wreck) tends to have the most comprehensive 'standard' signalling language. Search the internet and/or off-line research will provide many useful signs and signals that you can incorporate into recreational diving...

One of the best references I've seen is "Cave Diving Communciations" by Joe Prosser and H.V.Grey (NSS-CDS). The link (before) goes to a pdf copy online :)

The gesture/sign for "tank/cylinder" on page 21 is open to some heavy misinterpretation though... especially if diving with a British diver! LOL

It is a problem with ANY nationality. :)
