I use a 55lb explorer wing for both doubles and singles (with a STA) and it works just fine. It's not optimally streamlined compared to a 27lb wing, but I don't dive singles enough to warrant me buying a new wing.

I don't know much about these new Pioneer wings, but I've heard good and bad. I suspect they take a bit of getting used to -- probably a small learning curve for singles.

If I had to buy a wing, I would buy a Halcyon sight unseen. I would trust Halcyon (beyond all others) to have manufactured a quality product as everything I've seen from Halcyon is top notch. Also, if you don't like it, they'll take it back.

Good luck.

I also use a 55lb explorer wing for both doubles and singles (with a STA).

The majority of the complaints I have seen and heard about the new integrated STA wings have been difficulty getting the wing and tank straight on the backplate. I have not actually used the new wings with integrated sta so I can not confirm or deny that claim. If you really dislike the integrated STA you could purchase a normal STA and use it instead. The new wings still come with all the correct holes to mount to the backplate, specifically designed to allow people with older backplates to use the new wings.

Hope that helps!

But you'll have to try it for yourself. The wing is better than anything you can buy. You pay a little extra for it though.
A backplate is a backplate is a backplate. If you don't like how it fits your back put it in a vice and bend it a little. Only difference is the single tank adapter holes. And I've bought others not from Halcyon that have that same hole cut in it. If you want one I have a brand spankin new Aluminum one for sale that is black powder coated. With harness and 4 D rings. $80. I bought 5 of them and I only needed 2. For my own use I have Halcyon to. Also Dive rite Al and Stainless. Custom ones also. But to tell you the truth, You can't go wrong with Halcyon. I use Dive rite wings, OMS wings and Halcyon wings. I like the Halcyons best. But the others are fine. I just think the Halcyon are worth the extra money. The new OMS without bunjees are great too, but I think the Halcyon is a little better. If you don't like the new Halcyon slots. Just get a Single tank adapter and be happy. I use the slots. It's not as sturdy as the STA but if you need it sturdier you're diving doubles. Just my opinion. But it's not like it flops around on your back. It just shifts a little. I get mine to fit straight. Just have to get used to it.

I use the 55lb bladder with SS BP for doubles and I use the new 27lb pioneer wing for singles. I love it. I use bolts and the straps to mount the 27lb bladder. The bolts I use are pan heads so they dont touch the tank. I have never had a problem this way with keeping my tank straight. Though I must admit that I am planning on purchasing another Halcyon plate and harness so that its one less thing I have to change over when I go from singles to doubles. I hate having to reconfigure my regs too but this problem I took care of, I leave the 2 apeks ds4's on the doubles and just went out and purchased a 5ft hose and a pressure gauge for my Abyss so that I can use this strictly for singles.

Let's see, I have the new plate, old 27lb wing and new STA, everything locks in tight, no shifting. I am truly at one with my gear. (Learned this from the Dali) It's really the bees knees.

Now the new STA comes with the new S/S cam buckles. (lifetime guarantee)

No offense is meant by it either. It just explains a little about why I don't mind the little shift I get on the new style.

Iguana Don. When you have this whole thing with the old style channel STA. And it doesn't shift at all. Now when you put the backplate on and you are just getting ready for that giant stride have someone try this. Have them grab the bottom of your tank and the top of your tank from your side. While pushing on the top and pulling on the bottom does the whole rig shift on your back. I've done it to 4 different people and yes it will shift. Mine does to. And the shifting it does is well before the tank to backplate mount shifts. That's why I like the new style. Mine does shift a little. .5 inch maybe. But you'll never notice it while diving. Because if I had the rig tightened up to me where it would shift before I would. I couldn't stand up because I would have cut off the blood circulation to my limbs because all my strapping would be to tight. And without the STA the tank sits a little closer to my back. Plus I don't have the extra bolts that might become loose between the STA and the backplate.
And after saying all this. I still sometime use a STA on other rigs. I've just grown to like using the new system more. Some people wont like it, and I do see why. It's nice to not worry about it shifting at all. Both systems have there pluses and minuses.
