I am contemplating upgrading my Dive Rite h10 to the h1000. Is the 500 extra lumens worth the $200 bucks? Will I even notice much of a difference? Any other thoughts?

You can DIY for $130.00 and have two spare bulbs. The picture does not tell the story.

Side by side in the water there is no comparison. The 1000 is the way to go. That is, Untill you dive with some who has a 50watt and 5000 lumens and you feel a like a pre-pubescent teen in a room full of porn starts... *read= Inadequate*

I am assuming I would need to buy a new bulb and ballast. How do your propose to do the DIY and where would I get the parts?

From Welch Allyn:
Bulb: Welch Allyn - Lighting Products Division

Ballast: Welch Allyn - Lighting Products Division

There's a bunch of documentation at the W-A webshop too, showing how to connect the ballast.

For the "how" part of the DIY my only advice is to do what you're comfortable with... You're going to have to do some soldering to connect the wires, unless you can come up with some other as compact solution.

The H10 is a bit tricky to take apart and assemble, but the Dive Rite manual should give you an idea about how to proceed (see the "changing the bulb" part):

I don't usually go for this kind of operations unless I have another can light in a working condition. :D But the old H10 is now my new favorite primary after the upgrade. Well worth the trouble.

What he said. There is a $100.00 minimum to order, so 2 bulbs, 1 ballast, and you can use your old bulb too. Thanks Ematthew1992 on the deco stop.
