What a funny twist life has. After a nice morning dive (with the exception of the very uncourteous DIR guys that I had to deal with at Deco) I proceeded to Fall semester. First class was philosophy. Any guesses who was the instructor. Panos Alexakos stood in front of the class telling us how all of our beliefs should be questioned. Panos is fairly important to GUE and DIR.
Our first open class discussion was an attempt to do away the belief that there is only one way to do anything.
HOW IRONIC!!

I don't think I'm gonna let on that I was in a cave in the morning, much less in sidemount since I was alone.
I hope I can pass this class, as my 3.9 wouldn't appreciate being told that I'm not DIR in the classroom.

I'd say something is proven by this, huh?

Good luck. If you fail the class let us know.

You know, its interesting how you hear of DIR guys and attitude in a lot of these posts. My bet is that if there were no such thing as DIR there would still be a lot of divers with attitude (DWA's) but just no definitive lable to associate with them. I've certainly come accross a few divers with heavy attitude since i've started and I don't think any would be classified as DIR.

I'm in the computer field and I've also met a bunch of ultranerds with attitude (mostly back in university). These guys are always right and always jump into some technology thats esoteric enough in their eyes that its "cool" to know it and those who don't are lesser humans. Well, guess how often they got out with the opposite sex...

Bottom line is, maybe these uberdork divers pick up on DIR stuff and give it a bad name. I bet they get as many dates as the supergeeks from school. Most divers I know personally seem to be the nicest people. If they were ever dickish, they wouldn't be around for long.

...to date if you are DIR. I have the damndest time and have been through two girls lately who were great but just insisted on not diving DIR. I'll just have to keep looking and trying my best to be an uberdick on all the dive trips I can go on.

I'd say something is proven by this, huh?

Tom, don't let your Halcyon manifold hear you talking like that...they are programmed from the factory to shut down at various intervals during dives when the owner utters disparaging remarks about DIR and/or GUE.

You masy be right Eric. You knows, most of the folks I dive with are DIR/GUE. Great divers for the most part but sometimes the doctrine just gets to me.

We’re nothing compared to the incessant nattering, whining and complaining of the anti-DIR crowd. This note is a case in point. Typical post, this bulletin board is full of ‘em.

I knew your negativity would show up quickly as it always does when the precious system is questioned.
Some members are predictable.
Been divin' or typin'?

While you may think so, I for one am not "anti-DIR." Indeed, I think true "DIR" is a mature system that blends education, equipment, procedure and attitude in a way that is excellent. But I am not "anti-PADI" or "anti-NAUI" or "anti-SSI" either. What I am against is DIR advocates who bash all agencies but GUE, all equipment but what they dictate, all divers who don't cowtow to the "DIR" dictates.
I do not dislike these folks because they are DIR. I dislike 'em because they are jerks. And the term "DIR" should be junked, as it is used to describe only a narrow set within the set of "right" Scuba diving.

Yhea, you’re the type that keeps poking a dog, and when it finally snaps at you, you blame the dog.

You're right, some people are quite predictable.

“Precious system” -- Do you have a constructive alternative? No, just the insults. Vacuous as usual.

The least you could do is create a “DIR whining” basenote and keep it in one place.
