I just started diving about 6 months ago (PADI OW) and just completed my AOW last week. I'm based out of the Tampa/St Pete area and do most of me diving in the Gulf, and a fair amount in the many local fresh water springs. So far its been fun.

But did you guys notice that this is a rather expensive hobby? :D

No matter what this board says it can be an expensive sport. Min $350-$450 for cert, plus $1200 to $1500 per diver to outfit depending on what you buy and choose after all is said and done, without tanks, a boat, spear gun, etc....it can be very addicting, however when you're down among the reef and the fishes and the sea......the thrill of a lifetime and a lifetime sport. Just go with the flow and enjoy great memories in your 20's-80's !!

Agreed! Its only money, you can't take it with you so you might as well enjoy it now! At least, that's what I tell the wife...

Try not to put a price tag on happiness!

I don't have to, the dive shop is happy to do it for me!

Welcome from a fellow new person.

When it comes to expense, aren't most hobbies expensive? I can say for a fact that while none of them are cheap, I get more entertainment per dollar out of diving, as opposed to shooting, or going to track days with my motorcycle.

But they all cost a ton of money, both in intial investment, and in cost to do (although I suppose diving costs go way down when you do a bunch of shore dives!)

Plus you get to travel all over, meet new people, and see cool animals :shark:

Travel will really make your wallet cry.......and worth every penny!
