I am a new diver and will be doing most of my dives in a dry suit, here in our cold mountain lakes. Along with the cold, altitude and poor visibility; which all can be additional challenges.

At the end of May, I will be doing four open water certification dives along with two dry suit certification dives. Since the winter has been longer and colder than normal, the lakes in the Banff (mountain) area are still not free of ice. The water will be cold between 38F to 42F at the end of May. I am glad to be using a dry suit. Some divers actually use a 7mm wet suit, but I can only image how cold they are after 30 minutes.

I do plan to dive in some tropical waters, but have not choosen the destination. Any suggestions?

Hi buddy
I have just done my classroom and pool dives in Calgary, can't wait for the ice to clear so i can do the open water dives , hopefully in Lake Minniwanka, dry suit training is next on my list

Hi, there,

The good news is that Two Jack Lake is ice free and I understand that all open water dives will be held at that site.

Are you taking your course through Aqua Sport?

Lyall

Welcome to the board and the sport Lyall. Just so you know there is a fairly active scuba club in Calgary called the Underwater Outlaws. Once your certified you shouldn't have a difficult time finding someone to dive with if you check out their facebook page.

Happy diving and stay warm :)
