IN THE GULF OF MEXICO ?

From Bay News 9 Tampa

Entering the shark zone
Saturday, May 20, 2006

This is the nine-foot female great white shark.
Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota is building a new display featuring a great white, but more funding is needed to complete the project.

Displays don't come cheap and while Mote's new shark zone will open this summer, it's still in need of money to build the new exhibit for the nine-foot female great white.

"The main purpose of this fish is to be able to show the public what a real great white shark looks like," mote scientist Dr. Bob Hueter said.

Mote Marine Laboratory is the nation's leading shark research center, which is why Mote is expanding its shark exhibit. The new great white bonnet shark's organs were removed and stuffed with gill net to maintain her shape.

"She's gonna go back to the storage tank for now until we have the fundings for exhibit material," Mote staff scientist Debi Ingral said.

The new great white exhibit will be designed to better educate the public about the sharks that may be closer than some think.

"We do have them in the Gulf of Mexico, but they're very rare and we don't see them at this smaller size," Hueter said. "We see them at very large sizes but way out in the deep gulf.

Since Florida is the so-called shark capitol of the world and Mote the leader in shark research, organizers said it only makes sense that the two go hand in hand.

The great white sharks and the new one that's being preserved at Mote were all caught off of the California coast and donated to Mote Marine Laboratory. The first expansion of the shark exhibit at Mote Marine Laboratory will open this summer.
