I'm going to Grand Cayman this early summer with my wife and some family. My wife and I have passports, but a few in the group don't have a current one. I've read that they aren't necessary for U.S. citizens, but I'm wondering if this info is dated, and if policy has changed recently. I tried calling a few consulates, but have not been given a straight answer; just another phone number to call. I appreciate any recent information.
Thanks,
JAW

A passport is the gold standard for international travel, but it is not mandatory, depending upon destination.

For citizens of the USA, Canada, the UK, and British Dependent territories no passport is required. You must present positive proof of identification (such as a driver's license) and proof of citizenship (an official government issue birth certificate). Current entry requirements for the Cayman Islands can be found here.

A common error is having an "unofficial" birth certificate. Birth ceritficates issued as souvenirs by a hospital are not accepted. A proper certificate usually bears an official seal.

Yes, make sure that you have birth certificate from your local courthouse with a notary or offical seal. The airport that you are leaving from will not let you on the plane without it. You will also need a photo ID. If you are divorced and taking your children ,you will need a notorized copy of divorce decree and a notorized letter from the ex authorizing you to take the children out of the country. I just came back from Mexico and the airport we left the US from was very strict about the policies. There was a family that did not have the letter from an ex and they would not let them on the plane...

I agree with both ,May I add that if you have a child without a passport and no photo ID, you can go to your local Sherrif's office and pay to get a Sherrif's Id for that child, be sure to take his or her birth cert with you. My son was 12 when I had to do that.He felt like a big shot with photo Id in his own wallet. Have a great vacation.Turtle Gal

Thanks for the info. The laws on child travel are strict, understandibly so, both my wife and I have to present to apply for our daughter's passport.
We are very excited. Maybe I'll even go diving
