Hi all
I'm headed to grand caymen in mid march on a cruise and was wondering how the diving is around that time of year ?what should i expect on a boat dive ? i am new to diving and plan to get as much bottom time before i go but can you tell the dm what your comfort level is??? thanks

Missed your initial post! :)

Mid-march weather is usually very good and not rainy. Water temp will probably be in the low 80's ; plenty warm IMO and no need for a wetsuit. But that's me!

The DM's I have dealt with do want to know your comfort level. Often in the pre-dive brief they will ask if people want to do a guided dive or do their own thing. Also, they will check that those doing the guided tour are OK with the planned dept and swim-thoughts (if any)

Enjoy!

M.

Seabird24,

Hey, I missed your first post also. Sorry!

Definitely let the DM know your comfort level. If you are still jittery diving, perhaps let them know ahead of time.

And, if you don't have a buddy with you, (even if you do, come to think of it) it might be a good idea to ask if one of the shops other DMs would be willing to pocket a few extra $$s and act as a private escort/safety diver/dive buddy. Think of the DM leading the guided dive as a guide, nothing more. They're trying to keep an eye on everything and everyone, so they can easily miss something if you get in trouble. Spending a few bucks for a private guide could be a fantastic learning experience and confidence builder.

More than anything, have a great time and let us know how it goes.

Sorry I also missed your post. Because, I would have recommend Danny with Off the Wall. We did a cruise and used Off the Wall. He picked us up right by the Cruise Ship landing and dropped us off at the same place. He took us to 2 dive sites, which are not too far from the boat but further than Eden Rock, which was CROWDED with divers and snorklers. It was one of the best dives we did in the Caribbean. Just remember that Eden Rock diving and snorkling is walkable from the ships landing and usually 2 to 3 ship are in port and anyone wanting to snorkle or dive and not pay the high ship prices are at Eden Rock; therefore, I doubt you will get a great underwater experience with 100's of people around you. But, I could be wrong.

What DiveSergeant said. Never assume a boat DM is equivalent to a lifeguard or a buddy; they are just guides, nothing more. The only exception is the DM that you personally hire ahead of time to be your buddy.
