Hello:
I am considering a dive trip for October of this year to Grand Cayman, and have basically narrowed down my choice of locations to Cobalt Coast on the north end of the island, or Compass Point/Ocean Frontiers at the East End. Does anyone have any experience and/or recommendation between these two? Also, which end of the island is preferred for the best diving? Thank you very much for any feedback anyone may have!

Cobalt coast is closer to town and has shore diving available on-site. I have not stayed at either, but have dived with both. I personally like the wall on the East and Northeast sides of the island better.

I just got back from Cobalt Coast last night and will post a dive report soon.

My concern would be traveling in October; not just about a possible hurricane, but being blown out by nearby storms. It seems that happens to both the North and the East side a lot.

We were there last October. There were a couple of mornings blown out, but if you wait a couple hours the seas will change dramatically.

East beats North and West for diving. LC beats GC. Ocean Frontiers has big boats and heads out in pretty hairy weather. As they are right near the East point of the island, they can usually find some shelter going North or Southwards. In my experience, when it has been blown out on the North or West, it takes days, not hours, for the sea to lay down.

Having said that, if it is really really rough, most of the West side operators move their boats down to the South side so there is very little chance of being completely skunked.

Ocean Frontiers and Cobalt are in isolated areas so a car is a good idea, particularly if this is your first trip to GC.

I don't know about October but we are here now at Cobalt Coast and the waves are too big so we are being taken by vans to nearby piers. (Lighthouse Point, Morgan's Harbour and today West Bay)

Did a shore dive yesterday about 3pm and got pounded by the waves going in at Cobalt. Both in via the ladder and out. Hubby didn't come saying it wasn't worth it. I disagree. Yes it was very hard getting in/out but it was fabulous once out to 40-60 ft. I tagged along with another couple. Today the 3 of us are going to do the shore dive at Lighthouse Point where the waves are smaller. Hubby is taking a nap again. Dive Tech will drive us up and back.

Will post a trip report on my return but I wanted to say that the west/north side gets windy a lot. But at least we they move their boats and we can still dive.

Betty
