my wife and I are looking for somewhere for a 5 day dive vacation (hoping to dive 3 days) without our kids this August. been to Roatan, Bahamas, Cozumel, Cabo and Mayan Riveria. would go to all again except Bahamas (too damn crowded and busy). any recomendations ?

have thought about the above or Key Largo, Grand Cayman, Turks and USVI. give me feedback on what you would recommend and why? BTW we like quiet and peace and vino and good food with our diving. thanks for your help!:D

diveflick,

For short trips we head to Key Largo. It is an easy trip out of Minneapolis/Midwest. We find it easier to not deal with the customs.

We like Key largo for the different types of diving. The wife likes the shallow reefs, my son and I like the wrecks. There are good dive shops like Garden cove, Silent World, and Conch Republic.

The food situation is less of a draw. The fish house is pretty good in Key Largo. We usually head to Islamorada for dinner at the Green Turtle inn.

The food will be the best at USVI if your looking for an upscale style of eatery

I would go to Ft. Lauderdale/Pompano/W Palm Beach area with those requirements. Coming from SD, you dont' want to spend an entire day traveling if you are going on such a short trip. You can fly into Miami or FLL or WPB, rent a car, stay in an oceanfront hotel. Lots of diving options, tons of shallow wrecks in that area. Also, your restaurant choices are huge.
Check out a few dive op websites. look at the reefs/wrecks:
South Florida Diving Headquarters
Diversity Charters diving
Narcosis Dive Charters
Kevin's diving
Parrot Island Scuba

this is just a few of your options in that area... but each website has some good local info and photos, wreck photos, reef maps, etc.

BTW --- the photo in my avatar is one of the wrecks off pompano.
